Could do with a quick run-through of this new shock (I'm f'ing clueless) if you don't mind.

I've attached a couple of pics, and need to know the following:

1. The flathead screw in pic 1. What does it do?
2. The adjustment rings in pic 1. Why are there 2 of them, or are they 1 piece?
3. The dustcap in pic 2. There's a valve underneath - what is it for, and do I need to touch it at all?
4. The eyelets at each end of the shock are not quite aligned with eachother. Is this likely to be a problem, or will I be able to twist it when I fit it?

1. The flathead screw in pic 1. What does it do? Rebound adjuster.
2. The adjustment rings in pic 1. Why are there 2 of them, or are they 1 piece? 2 Seperate rings that lock together when you have adjusted the pre-load with them.
3. The dustcap in pic 2. There's a valve underneath - what is it for, and do I need to touch it at all? Depends what the shock uses for damping, Air, Nitrogen?
4. The eyelets at each end of the shock are not quite aligned with eachother. Is this likely to be a problem, or will I be able to twist it when I fit it? Bottom and top parts separate and will twist to lign up.

Thank you very much for the helpful info. I have two more questions if you will please.

Which ring do I adjust or does it not matter?

When you say the bottom and top parts seperate and will twist to line up.... Will I be able to twist one part when the other is on the bike, using a metal pole or similar? If not, how do I "seperate" them, if that's what you meant?

Cheers again

Rebound dampening, or possibly just dampening in general, would be my guess.

2. The adjustment rings in pic 1. Why are there 2 of them, or are they 1 piece?
One should be immovable, the other should be able to turn with a C-spanner. It's preload adjustment, if you didn't already know.

3. The dustcap in pic 2. There's a valve underneath - what is it for, and do I need to touch it at all?
Could be compression dampening adjustment, or just a valve for gassing the shock when its manufactured?

4. The eyelets at each end of the shock are not quite aligned with eachother. Is this likely to be a problem, or will I be able to twist it when I fit it?
The 2 moving parts aren't really fixed together as such, so you should be able to twist it. Can't be sure though.

Hope i've been of some help!

EDIT: Seems i was way too slow there Embarassed

In reply to your other question; I'd imagine you turn the ring that is touching the spring to adjust it, and the other locks it in place.

Adjustment rings, the one closest to the spring adjusts it, the other one locks the first one in place, undo the second one, more the first one so the spring is how you want it, then tighten the second ring into the first to lock it off.

Cheers

Cheers guys. All fitted now — but I have to say, the shock is a pile of wank. I'm pretty sure it's seized*, so I'll be taking it back for a refund. Probably serves me right for penny-pinching and getting a 'cheap' one.

*or my brother and I are massive idiots, and are missing something massively vital, but I'm pretty sure we're not.

indeed, didn't compress at all, on any settings we tried. Tried the adjusting rings at one of the shock and then at the other, also tried turning the screw. No of this made any different what-so-ever and the shock seems VERY stiff (maybe not even moving at all).

Put it this way, I weigh about 16st and stood on the pillion pegs (while my brother - nynfortoo - sat on the rider seat and braced his legs). I bounced on the pegs and nothing was really happening.

I've heard of a 99-02 (or something along those lines) r6 shock fitting, can anyone clarify this?

thanks!
