Honda cb250 won't start

I recently had a problem with my electrics cutting out and have fixed the problem (i think). While trying to fix the electrics I ran the battery flat so the bike wouldn't start. Managed to push start OK. Charged battery overnight then tried starting and fired immediately. I left the bike for a few hours and then tried to re-start and now it won't fire. Checked battery seems fine. It seems to want to go but it doesn't quite get there. Spark plugs appear to be sparking OK. I tried push starting with no luck, but after a little while of trying it let out a huge backfire and a lot of black smoke. I'm a bit worried that maybe i've done more damage.

Any help would be hugely appreciated. It's a 1999 Nighthawk type model. Thanks.

hiya im new to this and can seem to find where to start a new post so i hope its ok to carry on from here... anyway...
I have a 1982 cb250n in good running order right up untill i got it Mot,d, it actually passed and i was quite suprised, all they had to do was fit some rear indicators.... anyway i picked it up and rode it home but broke down about a miles away, the bike just instantly died like some sort of electrical fault, i pushed it home and it just would no start, i removed the spark plugs and held them against the cylinder head and no spark at all when engine turned over..... i replaced the plugs and now i dont have electrics full stop, no ignition lights nothing?? the battery is fine and tested and i have had a go at fault finding and here is what ive found and got stuck with...
i have 12v from battery to connector block behind headlight that goes to the ignition switch, once i turn the ignition switch on the 12v goes to zeroand when off i have 12v back... so i disconnected all connector blocks behind headlight and then turned on ignition and my 12v stayed, i replaced the connector blocks one by one untill the 12v went to zero again and the fault seems to lay with the connector block supplying the indicators etc, i unplugged all indicators front and back and i still loose the 12v so it cant be them.... this is how far ive got to and i think if i look any more im may well explode lol... any help would be sooo appreciated as this is now driving me insane!!
