Basically I'm looking at buying a cat b write off. Nothing particulary wrong with it, a few scratches, but nothing serious. Frame, forks and engine fine.
Am I right in thinking all I need is a new frame to put it back on the road.
For the price its at and the price of frames I have seen it is definitely worth it.
Cheers.

If you buy a frame that isn't a write off you won't be putting a write off back on the road. Get the good frame and V5 transfer parts from Cat B bike to good frame, then mot the bike sorted.

Yes, all you need is a new frame with it's own V5.

just don't tell the DVLA what you've done, or you'll end up with a Q plate.

FWIW a Cat B write-off is deemed not fit to go back on the road. However, it can be broken for parts.

So what you're suggesting would work. Use the parts from the Cat B to build/replace an existing bike - as chris-red says above.

The registration and V5 would match the existing non Cat B bike with let's say the engine number from the Cat B transfered onto it.

Hence, the bit above about the Q plate is wrong - don't believe everything you might read on an internet forum.

I'm pretty sure a cat B will have more wrong with it than a few scratches. Cat B's usually have serious structural damage.

Quote:
A Category B Vehicle is a Salvaged Vehicle, which is so structurally damaged, or devoid of parts that it is not possible to repair it economically or safely.

Are you sure it's not a Cat D?

Awesome Thanks. Karma
I'm just going by what the add says. Will run a HPI check on it later.
It looks like its been down the road on one side and done a few scratches down the fairing as well as a small section missing from the front fairing. Snapped footpeg as well.

Hi

People have managed to get cat A and B bikes back on the road by just applying to the DVLA for a log book.

The write off categories are an insurance industry idea, and other than they way the insurance industry try and describe it I have never seen any legal reasons why one cannot go back on the road (although getting insurance might be fun).

All the best

Keith

When building a bitsa or swapping a frame, technically, the frame and so many other parts have to be from one bike to retain the frames original registration. Otherwise it has to be Q plated.

It rarely happens because anyone with sense just swaps the frame and alters the engine number on the V5.

You won't get insurance for a cat b write off.

A cat B should not be put back on the road.

But it won't be on the register if he uses a new (second hand) frame with a V5!

Well its a ZXR400, so I can understand why they would write it off considering age (1990). Been and seen it and apart from the scratches it looks fine. It's for sale for 500 and a new frame cost on average 150.
And it would give me a chance to get rid of the divvy Very Happy

I'm not doubting you but they wrote my NSR off and that was bodywork and swing arm damage and that's a cat d.

Unless it's mistakenly been categorised wrong I'd look harder but as you say for the cost of a frame you might be onto a winner.
