long story short. I have a bandit. Im buying another bandit frame.modifying the frame.then moving engine, forks, wheels, electrics etc over to the newly customised frame

my question is this:

how do I go about registering a frame? I have found some on ebay and the unregistered ones are cheaper. also, could I get my current registration plate moved onto the newly modified frame

thanks

EDIT: on ebay it says that they dont have a title. I assume this is the same as not being registered

The ones you are looking at that say no title are Cat B write offs, they have had the frame number ground off. You'll never be able to put a bike with a frame like that back on the road. All you can do with it would be to make a trackday bike. They should really have the headstock cut off so they can never go back on the road.

Oh and frames with log books usually sell for more than brand new frames fromj the factory as they are perfect for people wanting to "ring" a bike, ie nick another bike of the same type then swap all the bits over to the "new" frame.

Hi

As above.

Reality is the frames without title are quite possibly stolen frames (hence no log book).

If you buy a frame with a log book and then transfer the bits from your bike to it then effectively you have put the frame back on the road with its own registration number, not the number currently on your bike.

Brand new frames can come with no chassis number at all, and these are then stamped with the existing frame number.

All the best

Keith

Probably these frames should not even be being sold atall. Not every write off goes through the insurance, a frame isn't much use without a V5.

Sadly these days, it has to go through an SVA test - something that's significantly tougher than the old ones. (To the extent that it's now almost impossible to build a trike and get it approved). Far as I was aware, it's not exactly cheap, either, though the inspection manual can be found online to give you a clue as to what you're aiming for.

In some cases, you can apply for an age-related plate, though it depends on how much you can convince the DVLA that it's age is verifiable. I wouldn't, obviously, recommend transferring the piece of the frame with the number on it across to the new bike, though that's what always used to be done with chops. (Hell, in some cases, you could take the chunk of frame in your pocket to the inspection and that was enough)

Not really accurate.

A frame with no title is just that, doesn't mean it's a write off at all as there's no way to prove what frame it is or where it's from if the number is ground off. Any frame with no number or V5 is most likely stolen as there is little other reason to remove frame numbers.

A frame with a number but no V5 could be a cat B as often the log book is surrendered to the DVLA, the number wouldn't have been ground off though. Also the headstock does not get cut off, that is only for Cat A bikes. If the frame has a number and no log book it's worth applying for one from the DVLA as it could just have been lost, but it could've been stolen too, as far as the DVLA is concerned the frame IS the bike, the rest of it just bolts in.

Cat B bikes/frames can go back on the road, but not under the original registration, you need to apply to the DVLA they will usually issue it with a new registration number, you take it for MOT and that's that.

Years back I built a bike with an unregistered frame and it had to go in for a Q plate. This was a pain with all the paperwork involved, much more involved now.

Category A A vehicle which should have been totally crushed, including all its spare parts.

Category B A vehicle from which spare parts may be salvaged, but the bodyshell should have been crushed and the car should never return to the road.

Category C An extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

Category D A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

Category F A vehicle damaged by fire, which the insurer has decided not to repair.

Theft These vehicles have not been recovered and ownership rests with the insurer who made the total loss payment. They are able to repossess the car as soon as it is identified, even if it has been bought innocently.

Taken from the AA carcheck web site. Okay it applies to cars but you can subsitiute frame for bodyshell in the cat B section. The easy way for salvage yards to do this is to cut the headstock off. In theory there should be no Cat B frames in rideable condition but i'm well aware that there are loads out there as no one appears to be very bothered about keeping an eye on it.

Title is what is refered to in the US as the registration documents.

Buying a bike without title is like buying a bike unregistered with no V5 but all numbers in place.

Hi

Remember that the write off categories are insurance industry standard that they try to make it sound like is the law, but is not a legal restriction.

All the best

Indeed, and even if a vehicle is declared a write off by the insurance company, it frequently doesn't actually get recorded so it's worth running an HPi anyway, speaking from experience as I used to work for a motorcycle accident investigation/salvage company.

Those "official" descriptions of write off categories are a general guide they don't seem to be completely correct, i'm speaking about experience with motorcycles, not cars.

As far as I know Category A motorcycles can only go to an authorised breaker, the frame must be destroyed but the breaker can sell the remaining parts, it doesn't all have to be destroyed. The fact that spares aren't really traceable to the vehicles original registration nor is it a requirement and DVLA only cross reference Engine numbers for theft checks, you don't even need an engine number on your V5.

And as said category B bikes can be fully legally re-registered for the road.

The only vehicles I've seen be branded cat A were those involved in a fatal accident or severe fire damage where the structure of the frame could well have been compromised (we had an SV1000S with a half melted frame...!)
