my bike is overheating now very badly
i think i may have damaged the engine just goin down the road a few times
we took it apart again searchin for blockages etc, but the radiator, engine and coolant tank are all full of coolant and seem fine
any ideas why it is overheating so badly?
thanx

Hi

My RS125 started overheating a while back when I had done the rings. Turned out I had used too strong a mix of antifreeze in it. Took some out and replaced it with water and the bike was fine. Antifreeze is very thick, and an impellor cannot pump it round that well.

After that, check for an air leek (use the bleed screw to get any air out of the system) and check the thermostat is OK (probably, as not heard of one going on an Aprilia 125)

All thebest

Keith

Hi

Think a car water pump is rather better at pumping round than the small impellor fitted to a bike. One thing to check is whether the radiator is hot when the engine is. When I had too strong an anti freeze mix in place the engine was hot, while the top of the radiator was slightly warm and the bottom cold. My bike got somewhat hotter than 90 degrees.

All the best

Keith

PS - you will need some antifreeze in place to stop the water corroding the alloy of the engine, but pure water is a very good coolant.

Hi

Not sure, but on any occasion where I have overfilled the colling system (on a car) the resulting excess preasure has resulted in the car overheating. My guess would be the thermostat you have put in is not correct. Other point to check is that the temp gauge is reading correctly (air air bubble round the sensor could cause odd readings), but to be honest it is about 12 years since I last rode a TZR125

All the best

Keith

Hi

Except when the antifreeze mix was too strong the RS has never had an overheating problem. The older '87 model AF1 would, but only slightly (they also were meant to run at a lower temp).

The one that gets real hot very quickly is the Bimota. Instant boil in tthe bag if you are wearing waterproofs and get caught in traffic

All the best
