Hi

Yes you can use the engine for braking. However blip the throttle between gears to avoid locking up the back wheel.

All the best

This reads as if you are locking up the rear, not a good idea for the tyre, let alone the stress on the chain ( or drive shaft) As has been said, blipping the throttle during the change down will match revs and give the best engine braking.

I just slip the clutch to bring the revs up, is that bad?

Either blip the throttle (which soon becomes natural) or just let the clutch out slowly.

Why work the clutch unnecessarily? Plus, blipping sounds ace.

I do similar to Vincent but I go down the gears letting the clutch out and once I get to first I keep the clutch held in, at this point I'm going at about 5mph. I never put it in neutral when sat at lights etc. I'm trying to do everything like they would teach you on the test.

I usually go down into first but that's probably because first will do about 40 so its not like I'm gonna hit the limiter or anything.

ms51ves3 if your practicing for your test don't forget to keep your right foot on the brake and only put your left foot down and always do observations as you pull away. Its all bollocks for real life but needed to pass the test

Already got that one checked. Though it's really annoying because you have to push my rear brake down a fair bit of it to hold the bike on a hill and my leg starts twitching Laughing

Not been doing the observations though and I still don't have my mirros fitted Whistle

The only time I really do observations is exiting roundabouts and if I'm going down a long straight road just to check if anything is behind me.

I've never ridden with mirrors.

Down-shifting right down to 1st for engine braking can be very hard on the box, and if you over-rev the engine doing it can be very bad on the valvetrain possibly resulting in skipped teeth and bent valves. Best to work your way down to 2nd and just use 1st for pulling away.

Just slam it down a cog, and then another, and listen to the bitch scream as you're fighting to keep the back end in a straight line -- nothing like it. Cool

Try doing it on a VTR storm Laughing this thing slides sooooo easy, sometimes I forget as I'm coming into a slow corner and bang it down the gears and end up sliding like fook Laughing

The engine braking is so good you could go on a ride without using the brakes if you went a bit slower and planned ahead, not that I would, but it's possible Mr. Green

+1 for blipping on down gears, sounds good, especially on a storm with loud cans Mr. Green
