Wiring a Cigarette lighter to your battery.....

As per the title, I shall be wiring a cigarette lighter to my battery so I can charge my phone when I'm away at the Isle Of Man in a few weeks.....I'm going to head down to maplin shortly....

I will be buying this -

Hi,

If it were me doing this (I intend to do so, to use my car's Tom Tom).

I would use a relay.

You would also need an fuse, something like an inline fuse, can be bought from a car dealer for about £1. I'd probably go for quite a low ampage, a car charger doesn't require much.

The relay, allows the power to flow only when your ignition is on, thus removing the risk of the battery draining out.

A relay will cost you about £4

I did some instructions before on heated grip fitting, this would be just the same. I'll see if I could find them.

Cheers for the replies, managed to find one at the store that has a battery level reader and shut off when battery is low. Will probably put a 10amp fuse in the circuit and connect it up to the battery!

Mine's 11 quid from Hein Gericke and was wired straight from the battery using an inline fuse. I didn't use a relay or a switch so that it would protect the circuit. Having said that, I don't run a battery so it doesn't matter much to me.

I made one, I have a switch an in line 5amp blade fuse and a 3 way cigarette socket adaptor.


I adaptor was bought from lidl for about £3 it was a male ciggy socket into 3 female sockets I cut the male part off then connected one end to the neutral and the other the switch then the fuse then the battery, it has been solid for months I have even moved it across bikes. Total cost was about £5 not including the conectors I already have, it's not particulary tidy but works I have it under my seat and plug my phone and satnav into it.

i used this website when i wanted power into a tankbag for a sat nav

Works really well. Probably a bit more expensive than maplins solution, but it is waterproofed, in a tankbag, and i have ridden through snow and hail with no problems with it leaking.
Ends in a standard cig lighter in the tank bag so can be used for anything really.

the wires don't look up to much tho, but it has all the basics you would need.

Just a note be carefull what you run though it and what else you are running, lights ect. Or you mite end up with a dead battery in the middle of a french motorway at 3 oclock in the morning.

Don't know if it's any help or not but I did the same thing a while ago so that I could plug a GPS into the bike.

I took a list of the things I found that I needed to maplin and got one of the guys there to find all the stuff for me.

I used a switch rather than the relay wired into the back lights. It was a bit easier for me but remember to turn it off when you aren't using it. I suppose a relay would be more useable.

I nicked the diagrams from someone else and they were pretty handy. It worked too, even though I made the thing. You can see my results at the end of the thread.

I used an old temporary accessory connector from Motosave. It connected directly to a car battery and is rated at 15amps.

Choped the croc clips off, 5amp inline fuse in to replace the 15amp and wired into the battery. I plug a maplins 1AH solar pannel into it when the bike isn't in use.

I've just skimmed through the thread, but I don't think anyone has mentioned this!! Might be the easiest option, especially if you already use an optimate.

Hi

If you want to make something like that yourself then you can buy the Optimate connectors as they are just battery connectors used in Tamiya radio control cars (although they use the +ve & -ve the other way round so take care wiring it up).
