PostPosted: 14:51 - 01 Aug 2008    Post subject: In need of help, import worries... Reply with quote

Hi well as you know i recently purchased a cbr125r and have paid the deposit, however i now have worries that it may be an import.

The main reason i have to worry is the clocks, they are as seen below. Not my clocks but same thing...

https://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk171/jonpodd/IMG_2125.jpg

They clearly have had a sticker over the clock to say mph. However i have been assured they do read in mph and not kph.

The dealer who sold it me told me it is a UK bike and the headlights go the right way, and also he says it was first registered in the UK.

So is the bike imported or legit?

Also if you think it is imported what should i do about it, should i still buy the bike or does it make a lot of difference to the bike?

Thanks

Jonnnnn

Hi

99% likely a parallel import whether someone has fitted a UK headlight or not, and whether it was first registered in the UK or not.

UK ones would have a speedo showing mph and kmh (legal requirement to either show kmh only or kmh and mph, mph on its own is not legitimate). Entirely possible to fit a converter to change the signal to the clocks so that they read in mph rather than kmh, which is probably what has been done here.

All the best

Keith

What should i do then? Should i contact the guy and ask him about this further? Or should i carry on and buy it?

Hi

Up to you. Plenty of imports around. Could be argued that being an import it is worth less, but if you are paying a price that you are happy with knowing it is an import then not really a problem.

Just make certain the headlight has been changed.

All the best

Keith

Ok thank you, im really worried about it now... would it make it harder to get it serviced or MOT'd?

Will there be many differences?

MOT should be fine as long as it has a UK headlight. Some dealers might not want to service it (but then those dealers would probably be arsey about servicing a bike not bought from them).

Insurance might care.

All the best

Hi

Not really a major worry, no. Chances are that it is a bike a non Honda dealer brought in brand new to the UK from another EU country.

All the best

If the clocks show Km/h only it is an import, it is a UK requirement that speedo's on anything above 50cc have both Mph and Km/h or are switchable between the two. By rights any bike that does not should fail its MOT but I dont think the MOT places care.

Hi

It isn't in the manual, and I have MOTed loads of bikes over the years with kmh only speedos. SVA is different.

All the best

Oh right I thought you meant you didn't need one at all for an MOT.

Hi

Not sure that you should fail the MOT for no speedo being fitted. It isn't a listed item and don't think they could justify it as being a dangerous fault.

All the best

How odd, I'll have to tell my boss to stop buying speedo drives for all the bikes for the MOTs then Laughing

Didn't we cover this a few days ago?

As Keith says speedometers aren't on the MoT check list, however they are in the construction and use regulations

As I understand it, the MOT tester can issue you with a notification to get it rectified under the C&U Regs.

It probably has one of those Motrax speedo converters fitted; the MPH sticker looks the same as the one on my bike. You can confirm this by looking at either end of the speedo cable - you'll either have a blue converter at the top or a gold one at the bottom.
