Sports bike + Pillion?

Now then lads, i'm considering a change in bike, few different ideas and what not and one is to a sports 600 , i currently ride a cbr 600f while its ok it doesnt excell in any area so one of my options is more of a sport 600 like a 600 RR or similar moreso for looks if im honest. I take the mrs's on the back quite a bit - question is would the RR be absolute agony for her as people make out or is it not really that bad?

I think it depends on your missus tbh. I have a GSXR K5 1000 and, like you, take the missus out a lot. She has no problem at all, within reason. We tend to stop about every hour or two for a smoke etc. She is quite small though, size 8 and 5' 5".


No sports bike is great for a pillion, but not a disaster either. My advice would be get into a dealers and both have a sit on some.

I mean she's comfy as hell on my 600f i cramp up before she does but im 6'3 so it limits me to bikes sort of, shes only size 10 5'6ish so i think she'd be ok but the stereotype of any sports bike pillion = agony lol.

Depends on the sports bike and the length of her legs, are they longer rather than shorter or shorter rather than longer ( if that makes sense )

As a mate of mine bought her other half a bike but she is only 4' 11" and he is 6' 3" you can see the problem although 1 bike was good for him it wasnt good for her as the pillion they settled for a Moto Guzzi 1100

Might be worth having a sit on an old shape RSV Millie too. Its not quite in your initial ball park, but its most certainly about as roomy and comfy as 'modern' sports bikes get. That and the SRAD were about as big as the sportier bikes ever got I think.

If you really want to make the missus comfortable, get a Futura though

SRADs are excellent for pillions. The worst bit about sports bike on pillions is when the pillion pad is so small and you sit so high up, so you're in the wind blast, and raising the centre of gravity.

But then an SRAD isn't much sportier than a CBR600F.

Worth thinking about though.

I've ridden for a while as pillion on an R6, and it was comfortable enough, but wasn't fun.

I can't fit on the original gixer 6's so they're out the window lol the newer ones are bit more roomy i found. My mrs is quite short though so even bein perched a lot higher on a sportier bike she probably wouldnt be further up than me so windblast isnt so much of an issue.

I'm the same height as you and I found the SRAD one of the more comfortable bikes I've ridden. But then I'm quite lanky with it.

Depends on how much you want to compromise , down Bilbao one of the English riders I met was sharing an R6 , she managed ok...

But I'd probably go the whole hog and get a hypersports , blackbird ZZR1200 , all of which have a seat similar to the CBR600F , and grab rails.

Though depends what you mean by sportiness, tbh

Yeah that's the SRAD I was talking about, I rode an SRAD for 6 months or so last year.

Seriously though if you are considering a CBR600RR have a go on a 2004-5 model , they have a nuclear bomb sized hole in the mid range , the area where most people ride at. And it is very noticable , Wave2k has stories about this.

If you simply want a more interesting bike, have you considered going down the muscle bike route? ZRX1100s and GSX1300s are pretty tasty, and a ton more comfortable.

I've considered a z1000 if you call that a muscle bike but i still fancy something sporty and nimble.

Z1000s are cool.

And by lack of midrange he means the power dips in the middle of the rev range. Which will become annoying.

Sports bikes may have pillion seats and pegs but they are designed for the rider only. If you take pillions that often I'd consider f*ckin' the sports bikes off all together.

Leg room tends to be my biggest issue, even on my old ZZR I could bang my shins on the fairing pretty easily. I had no issues on the older shape RSV whilst my Futura (which has very similar pegs but with higher bars) is the most comfortable bike I've ridden.

I'm just about flatfooted on both bikes with a 33 inch or so inseam if thats any help.

Hmmm, I'm a 34 seam and can flat foot the RSV, but I felt you need shoulders like a big cat to get comfortable.

Shoulders hunched back and together, with elbows pointed to the ground tucked in against the tank and wrists crooked forwards...

Everybody is different though ain't they, and you can never tell if you if you'll get on with it just because someone else did...

I find the problem with taking people on the back of a recent sports bike is they don't know how to sit on the buggers. The trouble with mine for example is the rear seat when fitted is about an inch or two higher than mine, couple this with the fact you are hunched over licking the yoke and its an uncomfortable stretch for them to hold onto you.

To make matters worse, they no longer have grab rails just a stupid wee strap between the legs which if you brake hard they often end up thumping into the back of you (not bad if they have big boobies)

I'm looking at getting a renntec grab rail for mine.

Sat on the back of a ZX9R the other day, it was awful . Perched ridiculously high, utter crap. I'd rather be a pillion on the back of my ER any day.

I have a renntec rack on the gixer, the wife is fine with it. She has no problem from the wind blast and is comfy as.
