I do these things so others can learn from it.

Over the last few days the bike has squirmed a little, followed the odd road repair or divet and just not felt 'right'. As the weather has been pants and road conditions are not any better I put the majority of it down to this. Coupled with being conscious of my own movements on the bike, riding like a wooden man in the rain etc it all made a little sense.

Things start going through your mind when mid corner and the rear is starting to feel skittish, a loose suspension or low tyres were my main things that sprung to mind.

Due to the hours that I've been working lately I haven't had a chance to check the tyre pressures, so when I arrived at work today I thought I'd have a quick look and see whats what. This is what greeted me:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/20082008568.jpg

'Shit'was what sprung to mind!

I've done 7,000 miles on them since owning the bike, not sure how old they were beforehand. Plenty of tread on them (or so I believe anyways), not too square despite the long boring commute and yet its canvas and metal. I've never done a burnout on them, I know I should now.

Riding home today was an experience to say the least and my starfish was puckered all the way home. When I stopped it was surprising how hot the rubber was, whether this was down to the fact that the tyres were quite shockingly soft as well or not.

Tyre shopping tomorrow I think.

Replace front and rear as a matter of course, don't mix brands?

I want a tyre thats going to be very much like the Corsa III's without splashing the cash, a good dual compound tyre that offers the grip when the right hand gives it some.

What about Diablo Rosso's, I think they are only single compound though.

I say duel compound purely for the fact that I have to commute on them. I would like sport tyres rather than touring tyres, snobby maybe?

I like the look of the Supercorsa's but not too good in the damp and wet if I'm right?

For a Joe Average rider am I really going to notice the difference in rubber? I just don't want to shell out a few hundred quid to be disappointed in the handling.

PS

Also how the hell do you break them in?

I broke mine in the same way I've broken in every other tyre, just by riding, gently and slowly getting faster and more aggressive. First 50 or so miles I did think the front tyre was flat or something though, it just felt totally wierd, but after that ..I've honestly never had so much confidence in a tyre.

Is that a Corsa 3 you had? My mate Stevie has used them as his last three sets on his old B1h, but he just bought a new bike (C6f 636) with these fitted and is now agreeing with me that PR2's are the danglies!

That's nothing TBH - compared to what happened at a guy at Bonneville today. Check-out the GPS reading:

I found this after heading down the Stelvio Pass and having the biggest rear lockup I've ever experienced...

It's nothing compared to the above though... Shocked Shocked

On the road unless pushing it really hard (hard enough to stand a good chance of needing your professional care) you might get the sports tyres hot enough to find them better. Rest of the time sport touring tyres are probably better.

All the best

Yes, kawasaki and dunlop Titsmarts (roadsmarts) will see you doing silly miles and silly weekend blasts. For such a heavy and planted bike (like most mid 90's kwaka's are) the tyres promote neutral, stable handling. If that's your cup of tea, they're cheaper than 2CTs (which won't last as long for commuting) or Pilot road 2's, which i've been told are very good and positive steering. I've had a comparison of chicken strips of similar ZX6R's (mine and southeastpetes) and it shows the amount of confidence that you can put on sports touring tyres, bearing in mind that we did a lot of commuting miles. I've had 1400 miles out of mine so far and barely look scrubbed in! Roadsmarts are 20 quid cheaper per pair on the whole than PR2's, i've not tried pirellis because i'm not a pirelli man - they're pretty agile but found that the diablos on my mates ZXR400 were too twitchy. I'm more of a dunlop lad.

My tyres are starting to wear a bit on the shoulders on the softer compound cos i like keeping my high corner speeds (>70) through the twisites. The tyres feel so planted and make me ride confidently. I find them more confident than my qualifiers and D207s which i last had, qualis were good but only lasted 4500 in total - they weren't worn as bad as that - i normally replace tyres just before the wear bars because chances are i'll be doing some stupid ride/tour and find that it'll have met its limits so it's better to be safe than sorry.

Woudln't got for the Rossos.

Fitted them to my bike after being persuaded away from fitting one of the 2ct breeds, wishing I hadn't; show them a motorway and watch them square off.

Got 4000 from the rear and it is needing replaced and that is with less than half that distance being used for commuting! They did do one track day, but that just showed up how soft the front compund is as it pretty work on the right hand shoulder, compared to the left and the only thing that could've done that was the trip round knockhill; (it has very few lefts) so will repalace the front as well as its at the wear limit markers already Rolling Eyes Sad

2CTs will be next, probablty Roads at that.

Always had them and always will, half decent in wet and don't take ages to get the temp up as you need to with the corsa III's

I've found they're often better in the wet than touring tyres because they have the grip in the first place, while a touring tyre doesn't have so much to start with, so isn't gripping that well in the wet anyway.

Supercorsas have remarkably good grip from cold and of course very good when hot.
I've done a mile's warm up from a brand new cold tyre then gone for it at full race pace... was fine, as opposed the Michelin which spat me off with a worn-in tyre that was being used cautiously after the first mile's warm up.

No way I'd pay for them new for the road though - go for part-worn race scubs. Can some times get them pretty cheaply, so good if you want to give it a go without so much risk.

Right, got an idea on what I want.

The bike currently has a 180 rear but I believe that it should have a 190 as standard. Should I change for the larger rear or just keep the 180 that I've got used to?

A 180 allows for slightly quicker turn in.

Though my rsv has 190 as standard and ive allways had 180 on it. I had to change my tyres a few weeks ago and they only had a 190 in stock and i cant say i notice much difference. The turn in is still pretty fast on rsv's and theres hardly much between the two tyres.

Thats some serious delamination going on there geri, i would be sending that one back to the manufacturers for testing.

I don't suppose you know what the speed rating was on that tyre do you?

I dunno but I doubt they will honour any warranty if they discover it's been run over-pressure, over-speed and with 50 kilos of lead bolted to the swingarm Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Yes weight to increase traction on the salt. Vastly increasing unsprung mass brings it's own problems though so it;s a compromise.
