Hi

For the TDR or the GPZ?

Don't think they will sell direct. They insist on a dealer fitting the kit and come out with some garbage about it only being valid if dealer fitted to support it.

All the best

Keith

Just make a throttle stop. Get a dyno print out at 33bhp. That is valid proof you can show to your old man, and whether you keep them in is up to you.

Don't go to scummy FI Middle Finger Un-earth the powervalve, in theory it should make the bike under 33hp Thumbs Up

Yeah, the mechanics and parts man at work think if you don't have an FI restriction kit and certificate you could get in trouble Rolling Eyes
It's innocent until proven guilty.
I told them you could get a dyno print out and the insurance would accept it and they were having none of it.

FI can get more money out of you too, to change the name over (I assume on the certificate) for the restriction kit costs £25 Rolling Eyes

You cannot go direct, I tried and was told that I had to arrange for a dealer to buy it and fit it.

Yes you could go down the route of home made restrications etc, but 'Dads' want proof.

Nope its not for the TDR, i have the kit and certificate for that one sitting in the garage from the previous owner.

Its for the GPZ, the thing is i have no solid argument for why i shouldnt restrict it whereas he has a long list of reasons i should and to be fair they all make alot of sence.

If i do restrict it it'l stay that way until the restriction period is over, im not going to go behind his back about it.

c_dug

p.s. dads a biker too and he knows more about it then i do, theres no tricking him!

Jack Hollis got a throttle stop fitted and dynoed to get his 33bhp and it's effective and cheap (comparitively) - £100 compared to silly amount for some washers and a certificate.

It's not always washers, in the bandit 400 they fitted something above the carb slides to stop them opening up fully.

As titz said i got a throttle stop and dyno print out for only £90, got it done at road and track dyno in aylesbury.

Click me

Thats his site just give him a call saying you want a throttle stop and dyno print out for a 33bhp restriction. Only takes 30-40 minutes and the print out is proof it's restricted, easy to take out and put back on if you needed too.

By far the best and easiest way of restriction in my eyes, only thing is overtaking can be a bit of a pain sometimes because the throttle just stops and you can't turn it anymore Laughing

I'd say, that I haven't heard of anyone being completely fucked over by being unrestricted.

Would be interested to hear some anecdotes though...

All you have to do is get a couple of washers fabricated, it's hard to find the exact diameter without a bit of digging, as FI washers are oval shaped (in an attempt to stop people copying them I guess)

Anyway, find correct diameter to limit power, get washers punched of the right size (can't cost more than £20 or something), fit them yourself, and drop the bike on a dyno (which is what they'd do if you crashed, anyway, I assume) et voila, less than half price of FI

Quick point about restriction,

If it is done through the carb could you work out the ratio and make the washer like that?

i.e. if the bike is 66bhp you put a washer in that restricted half the air flow?

Or doesn't it work like that?

Hi

Basically, amount of air = amount of power. So the total combined area of the holes in the washers is likely to be pretty constant between bikes.

Might easily be 10% out, but depends on how close you want to be.

All the best

Keith

Restriction ends 06/06/2009 so less than a year now.

Kickstart if the combined area doesnt change (much) then does that mean washers are interchangable? in which case i can whack the restrictors from the TDR into the GPZ?

Something about that sounds wrong to me so im guessing ive misunderstood what you've said?

Hi

Outer diameter means they would probably not fit, and being a 2 stroke might make a difference as well. But from another 4 stroke twin it would likely be pretty close.

All the best

If you wanna do it on the cheap just half the airflow (GPZ's are about 60 bhp right?)

Find the diameter of the intake pi r square it, divide the number by 2 square root it the divide by pi if you times that by 2 your should have the diameter of the inner whole of the washer.

But presumably that would only work with washers from something with similar power like a CB500 or GS500, whereas washers from something like a TDM900 would have smaller holes because it needs more restricting Question or am i thinking the wrong way about this?

Im not planning on using the restrictors from anything else by the way, just curious.

Restrictors are besoke (usually to the bike) though you may be able to switch them about on similar bikes, e.g. CB - GS, because they have similar engines that make similar power.

The TDM has a throttle stop Wink.

But you are on the right line the more power the smaller the hole would need to be. With usages of a dyno a throttle stop would be easier to fabricate.

My previous post was talkin about manufacturing the kit yourself, i.e.

Your GPZ has twin carbs each with an intake diameter of 10cm (Big I know)

You divide 10/2 to get the radius 5,
pi5 squared to get the area 78 (rounding)
Half the area so you get the amount of airflow for 33bhp (you only air it because the gpz is twice 33bhp, for I bike with a 100 you would 1/3 it)
39/pi and square routed give your the raidius 3.5 double it to get the diameter 7.

So if you intake was 10cm you would want a washer with a 10cm outer diameter and a 7cm inner diameter.

Honestly it is not as confusing as it sounds.

The easier way is to go on a GPZ forum and see if you can buy some washers/ get someone to give you the dimentions.

Nope. The hole in the middle will be about the same size. The power is largly related to the amount of air (forgetting turbos and ram air for now). Yes there will be differences, but not a massive amount.

chris-red wrote:

The GPZ has a claimed 60hp. Charlottes one when dynoed was about 45hp, which is probably slightly low, but not much less than would be required for the GPZs top speed.

You calculation assumes that the carb size is the limiting factor for the bike already.

All the best
