So I went to Hein Gericke for a new exhaust, and I'm told that they've gone under...and yet their website is still up and says nothing about this.

I wouldn't have thought they'd have any financial difficulties, I've seen a lot of Micron exhausts around...can someone explain what's going on and why I had to buy a Blueflame?

Micron concentrated on exhausts for the larger cc end of the market. If they had sold stuff for small bikes like Motad has done maybe they would stay in business.

Generally speaking I can't see that the administrators for a company that could potentially be a going concern would go ahead and shut down the website immediately. And they are hardly going to update it to say "Great news! We're insolvent!"

I get the impression that Micron lost out to people like Blueflame because people want tarty and not power. Micron were one of the only manufacturers to research their product to produce more horsepower rather than just to look nice. There's the rub really, their last range of exhausts looked like a dogs breakfast.

Petemell, I honestly don't think there is much of a market for bikes up to 500cc any more. 33bhp restrictions, coupled with no one making two strokes and 400's any more, mean that the only small bikes one seems to get are restricted anyway so more power is mostly irrelevant. Anyone who has a full license usually goes for a 600 or above anyway. In fact I think 33bhp is artificially keeping the small bike market alive. Without it, the smallest thing you'd be able to buy that isn't a scooter or a 125 would be a CB500.

Hi

Not sure they have gone insolvent. Impression I have is that they have pulled out of the bike market and are concentrating on the car market.

As to their products, partly agree with Marjay. Most people want a tarty looking noisy exhaust with a fashionable brand name and do not care too much how well it works. Micron stuff might well have been decent quality, but the name was more associated with the bottom end of the market (despite their products being far better than the rubbish pedalled by many), and their prices were not that low.

Hi again, there is a market for bikes upto 500cc.
Most people use these bikes as a day to day workhorse and they do rack up high mileages.
These bikes all need a new exhaust now and again.
The bikes that are restricted are generally not restricted by the exhaust anyway.
Current there is only Motad and these aren't that good.
It is a pity a company like Micron cannot make quality exhausts for this end of the market as they used to years ago.

Microns market has (as far as I can remember) been performance, not replacement for OE exhausts. That market generally falls to Motad. Even so, if you look at the bikes that are out on a day to day basis, hardly any are in the 126-350cc bracket and you only generally see 400's as grey imports.

The market for exhausts for these bikes (particularly performance exhausts) is minimal.

Well CLF Technologies are in administration and they are the parent company of both Micron & Magnex exhausts, so it looks like they are almost up the spout at least.

Surprising who lurks around here at times.

Because companys abroad can do it better and cheaper.just look at the british car and bike industry.
As a mechanical enginerr and fitter in the last 3 years alone I have seen the british engineering industry go even further tits up. Mainly due to our government taxing the tits off anyone or anything to do with it.
Also the number of people leving school / uni and going ino the industry is tiny and decreasing each year.

At 26 I am the youngest by 28 years in the job I am about to go into.

Its a shame because micron had some good ideas and exhausts especially with the serpant hydroformed headers.

Hi, yes they can do it cheaper, but not better.
Some of the imports are ok but lots of it is rubbish, as a mechanical engineer you should know this.

True but the same can be sait for british workmanship.

We recently had some titanium parts made up in good old blighty. To be honest they looked like they had been made by a blind epileptic.

The same work was contracted out to a spanish company. It arrived 2 days ahead of schedule and was a third cheaper. It was also beutifully made.

I admit we can make stuff in our country and we can do it well but because of massively high overheads our country is outpriced by most of the modern world.

Compare Micron and Akrapovic exhausts. I had both on the ZXR400, the both cost the same (within a tenner) were both made of the same material but the Akra was far better made and gave equal power.

Given the same choice what would you go for?

Quite simply its called treason,

In France / Germany / Holland and most of the industrialised nations of the G7/G8 , the politicians enacted laws which protect their manufacturing industries , it chokes growth but still protects it....

Its why when you go to France everybody more or less drives (including the cops) French cars , in Germany german cars...

While in the UK we have had politicians since the 60s who have not enacted such laws so that corporates asset strip companies and sell them to foreign firms, and give them directorships when they get kicked out of government...

Politicos are busy stuffing their pockets, but this is only a small part of the apolocalyse that is about to hit the UK , you see that today? £1 = $1.83 , in 1 month 1/8th the value of £ has vanished..
