town riding = stiffer gears?

Last night myself and a few friends randomly decided to take a trip into london, after a while i found my gears were clunking into place rather than going smoothly, my friend on his XR said his were similar, is this just a result of the clutch heating up from constant use and dragging or is there something more worrying happening?

This morning on my way to work about half way there i pulled the clutch in and went to flick up a gear to find the gear thingy wouldnt budge Confused this happened twice but for the rest of the journey it was fine.

Im a little worried that something is up, however its a new bike to me so mayby im doing something wrong Question

Any thoughts or ideas?

Is the gearbox lubricated by the engine oil? If so, are you due an oil change? Could help... Thumbs Up

The gear oil and everything else gets much hotter at lower speeds because the cooling system doesn't work so well.

When it gets hot it gets thinner and doesn't lubricate and cushion between the cogs so well.

Changing the oil shouldn't be overlooked but it doesn't mean your oil needs changing because you notice this happening.

Just changed the oil on my CG, after an engine flush. My 125 does it when hot as well - the controls feel heavy and a little clunky. Oil level remains as it should be when I've checked after the bike's cooled down; maybe some motors are just prone to it?

hmmm, its probably worth mentioning that the guy told me he'd changed the oil and filter about 100 miles ago so that /shouldnt/ be the issue.

to be honest i think its nothing to worry about, ill check the oil level just to be safe though.

Does anyone else find gears are clunky if you change early. If I change above 10k rpm is super smooth but below 6k is really notchy.

Engine oil isn't suited to lubricating gearboxes. With gearbox oil, EP80/90 - the EP stands for Extreme Pressure, meaning the pressure between the gear teeth and engagement dogs. Engine oil isn't formulated for this pressure so more frequent oil changes are required as the molecules get broken-down. Running the engine hotter in town traffic makes the situation worse.

Confused im guessing theres not much that i can do though as its one compartment in the engine? or should i be filling it up with gear oil instead?

Definately not!

Things you could do:

Use better quality oil
Change oil more often
Make sure your chain & sprockets are in good nick, well-lubed and adjusted right.
Fit an oil cooler
Experiment with different ways of changing gear. More revs = smoother changes, up to a point.

I definitely find it easier to change when I'm up the revs a little bit rather than short shifting.

Something I notice I do sometimes when Im giving a bit of stick is that I load up the shifter by pressing on it slightly when I'm about to change gears. More often then not when I do this from 1st to 2nd I will hit a false neutral Embarassed
Not good when you rev the tits off it thinking you're in second and don't go anywhere.

A quick adjustment of the lever itself to a slightly higher position sorted this for the most part. Very Happy

I get this too sometimes. But worse : when the bike is stopped it is very very stiff getting into neutral, and sometimes it dosen't !

So every time i go work and shops ect. and go to park up, i have to use the kill switch. When im riding, it will go perfectly from 1st to 2nd and flick past neutral on the way, but when i stop it dosen't move ! Anyone know why ?

It most probably is the clutch heating up, it happenes when you are going slow throught London (or anywhere else) It would have also been hard to pull the bike back with the engine on, it in gear and with the clutch in. It has happened on my GS and TDM. You need to slightly adjust , I your riding style and not slip the clutch as much or do what I do, and filter like a mainiac it keeps your temps down. You could change the gearbox oil for good measuremight actually have some left over from my RXS your welcome too, I will check.
