So went out this morning in a good mood, ready for my a2 test. FAIL. Happened in the first 5 minutes, got 5 minors but failed at a junction. (Paint diagram attached) road was really busy, I see a gap to turn out left, and some trollop in a van comes racing across from the other side and we meet as we're both entering the lane, thought I would have had right of way seeing as we're on my side of the road, but obviously not. So afterwards coming home, get lost on the a3 trying to find hampton court, on the inside lane doing about 70, see a camera at the last second and managed to get down to about 60, speed limit being 50, fuck sake. Finally come off the a3 at tolworth which is where I had just come from, and on the way back the bike starts bogging down, no petrol, switch to reserve and ride for a few miles shitting myself on my overheating, underpowered mess of a bike. I love life Very Happy

I always thought that if you were turning left then you had right of way over someone opposite turning right onto the same stretch of road as you.

Hard luck Alex Sad

Do they get right away because they have less opportunities to get across the junction?

EDIT: What would you do in the same situation if the person opposite waved you to go? Do you go or wait until they have moved first?

You would have the right away however I suppose if the van was pulling forward giving the intention he was going whether you liked it or not then you should wait, thus avoiding a potential incident?

The van had probably already started moving off before you pulled out.

Unlucky with that but don't let it get you down. Remember the test isn't the same as normal riding. I was told it was an immediate fail if you performed an action which caused another motorist to brake or take any avoiding action.

I hope you can get another go booked before the end of the month.

I think it also depends who was there first, as you both joined a major road from a minor. I was always taught that the first vehicle waiting had right of way. If he moved first and was then on the major road you should have given way and allowed him to complete his manoeuvre.

The van does have right of way because the junction is slightly offset to the one you are pulling out of. And as he is pulling out before your junction, you pulling out will mean you are in effect pulling out in front of him.

I think I explained that correctly!? Thumbs Up

Think the main thing there is that he was sitting in the middle of a main road, and you were at a give way.. Although he's not in the flow of traffic, he's still on the main road, and you're supposed to give way to any traffic on that road.. Hope that makes sense..

In day to day riding though, assuming you're on a pretty quick bike, and seeing that he is sitting a little further back.. as long as you're confident you won't get in his way, I'd personally probably pull out.. Obviously that's just a decision to be made in the moment, you should know the capabilities of your bike and be able to judge whether it's a risk or not..

Definately a fail on a test though Sad Hard lines, good luck with the next one Thumbs Up Karma

Sorry to hear that DanielSON, it's a bitch aint it. I hope I can get a test in before the end of the month but aint much chance is there. And to add to yesterday, on the way to work this morning, I got a 2 inch screw through my rear tyre, came out the other side and hit the rim, and has been hitting the mud guard as the wheel turns. So bus home and waiting for a new £98 tyre.
