re-formatting external hdd's

i have just bought a maxtor 180gb portable hdd

i need to format it to fat32 but dont know how
im running vista on my pc

any help would be highly appreciated

I think, if you plug it in and right click on my computer and select 'manage' (or similar) and go to disc management there will be an option in there.

Use NTFS file formatting, FAT32 has problems with large files and is slower , unless its a MAC? I think they have problems with NTFS, but I may be wrong.

Doh! Just remembered there is a 32 gig size limit for FAT32, so I guess your only option is to use Partition Magic and create a partiton no bigger than this. You should then have the option to format to FAT32 from within Windows.

FAT is also cross-platform friendly.
Not everything revolves around the world of windows.

Sadly, percentage-wise, I think you'll find it does. All camera, printer, etc manufactureres assume its going on a Windowz box so all drivers and support apps are in this flavour. As to what filesystem the PS3 uses I have no idea, but the OP is of the impression that FAT32 will suit his needs, a filesystem introduced with, erm, Windows.

not sure if this is still active I was just having a read...

From looking round the web the PS3 uses an encrypted file system as you can place any unformatted drive into the unit and it will format it in what seems to be a linux style setup

The command it appears to run is this livecd / # mkfs.ext3 -j /dev/sda1

this is what the linux live cd uses when you install it to a ps3. The Hypervisor sony use to mask the actual hardware from the linux user seems to pass commands from the linux install to the hardware and vice versa. We found this out at work as we wanted to buy about 70 Ps3's and use them for a Citrix dev farm, no such luck!

The web bods are saying that sony wont tell anyone what it uses as rightly so its the first step to cracking the file system and therefore cracking the Ps3.

the same thing happened when the XBOXMOD team cracked the 360 I think they used a game save from star wars KOTOR to access the code and create the firmware flash for the dvd drive (or so I've read)
