You may get away with sticking a bicycle computer on it. The kind you get for a tenner from Halfords. Someone will have to confirm if this is sufficient however.

Hi

For SVA the speedo must show mph and kmh (either all the time or at the press of a button switch between them). Suspect it also inists on a mile counter.

For SVA I would be surprised if you could get away with a digital bicycle speedo.

All the best

Keith

I bought a conversion unit for something like 15quid from Hein Gericke which included stickers to go over the kph

I thought KPH wasn't a requirement for older machinery, just had to have a reading in mph?

"A speedometer, or facing plate must be fitted that indicates ‘miles per hour’, in uniform intervals not exceeding 20 mph, up to the maximum design speed of the vehicle and which indicates the speed within the required limits of the actual speed.

A UK approved speedometer may have to be fitted from a UK model. It may be wise to have standard wheels/tyres fitted to the car as ‘after market’/non standard wheels/tyres may result in the speedometer accuracy being outside the acceptable limit. "

Hi

SVA is pretty strict on some of the rules, and the rules do say you need both mph and kmh markings (or one and being able to switch to the other, to cover digital speedos).

Fairly sure that the speedo face for a normal speedo must show both. You cannot just have a sticker on the speedo glass.

Not sure about the odo in kph. That might be OK. However not sure that one that can be easily reset (like a bicycle speedo) would be allowed.

You are right that some bikes have mph only speedos and in theory these should not have been allowed a UK registration. In practice once registered they are are going to get away with it.

All the best

Keith

Hi

Think it is that kmh is required by European type approval, etc, and the UK requires mph in addition. Without the kmh then it doesn't pass the European rules.

And nothing to stop you riding a 125 to other countries that use kmh.

Have you bought the SVA manual to tell you what they check? There are all sorts of things, most of which you shouldn't have a problem with but some you might.

All the best

Keith

no , didnt know there was one Confused

ive just been going on what ive read from there website

https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/ImportingAndExportingAVehicle/DG_4022106

from looking at it seem like i will only have a problem with the speedo, if i get a digital bike one and fit it alongside the existing one that should be fine right ?

cheers again for the help Thumbs Up

Hi

There is a full manual and they do charge for it (£30 it seems).

Bit more detail here:-

https://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/repository/Motorcycle%20SVA%20Guide.pdf

Page 5 mentions the inspection manual.

I honestly do not know about the push bike speedo, but it would surprise me if it is acceptable for SVA.

All the best

Keith

First part of the quote is out of the SVA manual, the second is a car importers interpretation. Pulled it as an average from sources on a google search.

tolerance.

yeah mate it went sweet, cheers for askin Thumbs Up

just bought a motrax converter in the end and it worked a treat, the tester missed out a load of the things mentioned in the manual like sound level and a few others Confused

i would of been gutted if the bike failed on the speedo, the speedos ment to go up to the maximum speed but because it wsa a kmph it goes up to 200mph and in the application form i said the bikes restricted with a topspeed of 70mph Very Happy

i think he might of just gone easy on me because i had a little chat and a laugh with himas he did the test

driving down the dvla later to get registration sorted Razz

Excellent, thats what we like. The speedo should say at least the speed the vehicle is capable of - so most speedos are wildly optomistic on the righthandside anyway. Laughing

Have you got proof of age for it from Honda? If you haven't could be worth investing £30 to avoid getting a q plate.
