Volvo Drivers?

Why do they (Volvo drivers) get a bad name??

Now, I'm fairly new to bikes and I'm the proud owner of a NC30 Honda and a Volvo 850 T5. The Volvo is a quick car. It'll do 155 without much difficulty but why do people think i'm a w@nker for driving it? Especially bikers?!!

I've had quite a few other cars in the past, Mercs, BMW and quite a few VWs. Why are Volvos held in contempt by many members of the public?

Please explain the stereotype, I don't get it!

Nothing wrong with Volvos, and definitely nothing wrong with BMW's.

In this day in age, none of the mainstream cars have particular type of driver, apart from old biddy shopping carts like the Cityrover etc

Volvo drivers were known to be TANK drivers as Volvos were built for safety over anything else (well thats a general opinion). I would say the stereotype is like a 4x4 dirver think they can go anywhere safe in their sherman tank.

Good, keep em coming. I've had a few mates who thought the Volvo was a bit of a bus until I took them out for a run in it

Saying that I was very surprised how quick (in my opinion) a 400cc bike could be!!

From observation on the roads, quite a few of the lower-spec BMW 3 series and, more often, the X3/5 are driven aggressively.

Obviously it isn't everybody who drives one, but I suspect that there's often a certain 'type' of person who chooses to own/lease them for the image it supposedly provides.

I wouldn't want that image....

Traditional Volvo drivers now drive people carriers.

What image do you think you obtain from buying a 3 Series ? Mondeo man has become 3 Series man. The 3 far outsells the Mondeo these days, and for a good reason, they're bloody good cars.

The X5s image? Aggressive, "sod everyone else", "Get out of my way!"

The 3 Series? "Look, I can afford a slightly more expensive car, even if it is only a BMW 318i with no optional extras, although tailgating others comes as standard"


At one time the Mondeo/Cavalier were the big sellers. Now that those cars have become much larger fewer are sold and many people seem to go for the Focus/Golf/Astra .

Afraid I disagree. Personally, in today's world I think badge kudos starts with Porsche at the bottom.

BMW/Merc/Volvo/Saab are all a muchness these days. When I used to drive a 318i with no optional extras I thought "I drive a 318i with no optional extras" not "my car was a couple of grand more than a Mondeo so I must be better than a Mondeo driver". Of course there are discourteous BMW drivers, but there are driving all other marques.

I don't think you can pigeon hole people's driving style by the car they drive anymore. Most people can afford a 318i these days, that's why you get 18yo scrotes like me (a few years ago now) driving them like idiots, but you also get 35yo women driving from the shops in them too.

I'm always more wary of small cheap Korean cars, as IMO they are usually driven by people over the age of 60, with very little awareness of what's around them.

Back on the OP, I don't think Volvo drivers get as much stick as they used to. I certainly don't think anything less of a Volvo driver.

I had a fuck off Volvo 850 estate a year or so ago. Was sweet. Perfect car for someone owning a bike - at entirely the opposite ends of practicality.

They do make you drive like an utter cock tho - I swear that I cut more people up, and was a much more aggressive in that than I ever was, or have been since. You just feel so safe - even though a new Fiesta would outperform it in terms of safety.

Clearly I was nice to bikes tho!
