PostPosted: 18:51 - 15 Sep 2008    Post subject: Tank Painting Reply with quote

Right, tonight i lashed a load of petrol all over my fuel tank, silly thing to do, i know.

However, it was purple, pink and got knows what else so i've decided when i get around to stripping the bike down to send the frame, swingarm and wheels off for powdercoating i'd paint the tank too.

Now, i'm taking it back to bare metal, going to fill a couple of small dents and then give it a few coats of some osrt of primer.

I then plan to do a white base coat, mask off two stripes down the center of the tank (or maybe one off side) and then spray it a gloss black with a couple of coats of this.

I then want to stencil on a couple of suzuki decals to be sprayed in white also, however obviously i'll do this before the black goes down.

I'll then seal it all with a coat of lacquer or two.

My question is this, i want to use nothing but rattle cans so which paints should i be looking at and do i need anything special to use as primer on the bare metal?

Oh and does my painting idea sound ok in theory?

Many thanks!

I did pretty much the same thing with my tank a few weeks ago. cam out perfect and is very petrol proof!

P38 filler from Halfords
Halfords Grey primer
Halfords wet and dry paper
Halfords car paint
Halfords paint resistant laquer.

Notice a trend? Laughing

Personally wouldnt use halfords paint,
they dont have very good colour match to all over brands let alone when you go back in and ask for another can of same colour.

and if its bare metal you should be using a etch primer. or 2pack primer but unless you have a spraygun the 2pack isnt possible so etch!

Why waste the time stripping the tank to bare metal?

It's chipped, and dented and rusted all over the place, i want to do a complete restoration of the tank and the paint on there is very poor anyway, it just flakes off at the slightest contact.
