 |

Went to remove one of the dowels that goes between the crankcase halves to make it easier to clean the mating surface.
Gripped it a bit too hard in the pliers and ovaled it.
"Ah well, that one's fucked, I've got a spare, doesn't matter if I grip it really tightly now." Thinks I as I grab the mole grips from the toolbox.
So, now I have a mangled stump of dowel stuck in my crankcase.
I've been applying penetrating oil and it is currently in the oven.
There is still currently just about enough sticking out to get hold of.
Any other useful suggestions? Something tells me this would be a complete and utter bastard to drill out.
Moral of the story?
1) More haste, less speed.
2) Mole grips have no place in the workshop until AFTER things have gone wrong. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

file it down a bit on either side, and get a spanner around it? ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. Set a nut over it and fill it up with weld? If the case is aluminium you won't have to worry about accidently welding the steel to it.
Are the dowels hardened? If they are it might weld but will probably be very hard and just snap on you. ____________________ Go back to bed - You have no rights - "Streetfighters ~ Mainstream motorcycling's crackwhore sister." |

Right. It's REALLY mangled now.
I reckon it'll have to be drilled.
Had it up to 230 degrees and still not shifting.
Why the hell didn't I just leave it where it was!?
Tomorrow though. I've already caused enough trouble for one day! ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

if you ignore the problem, it might go away ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. For removing stuck dowels, it's always better to tap a good-fitting drill bit into the centre-hole backward before attempting to grip them. Bit late for that now I know.
As a remedy I'd be tempted to get some 16 gauge plate and drill a hole in it of the dowel OD size. Fit the plate over the dowel and grind the dowel down to the plate. Now remove the plate and you should have 1.6mm or less of dowel sticking up proud of the case half, which should not be mangled much. If that still won't do the job of locating the halves, I'd re-drill the plate the same size and use it as protection for the cases and drill down into the dowel a bit. Once at or below the case surface I'd turn-up a solid plug the length of the original dowel. Half the length would be the same as the OD of the dowel, the other half would be the ID of the dowel, with a small starting taper on the end, then I'd tap the plug into the bit of dowel stuck in the case. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
