I'll be using my bike for commuting shortly and have recently bought a heavy duty chain to secure it whilst I'm at work. Thing is I don't fancy putting it in a backpack incase I come off (only been riding three weeks) and my funds won't stretch to a tankbag just yet and paniers are a no go if possible. Are they my only options?

On my CB I keep it under the seat.

On my Planet I used to keep it kind of wrapped round the back of the bike round both the bungee hook rails (if that's what they were). I only had to unlock it and move one side of it to thread it through the back wheel.

You should manage something similar on any bike I would imagine.

You can get a small lock carrier that attaches round your pillion seat for £25.

Very wise.

That's exactly what happened to a friend of my brother's. He was carrying a heavy duty bike chain in a backpack when he came off. He's in a wheelchair now. Broke his back.

Cargo net, then leave it locked up at work. Easiest option all-round

And don't hook it over your body! If you come off, nasty things will probably happen i.e. broke ribs / spine etc.

A £25 bag for the chain kind of seems the best option, huh?

Chains quite often come with a little bag with velcro straps designed to fit round your pillion seat.

But I would just go with the 2 chains option, leave one at work and one at home so you don't have to bother transporting it every day.

I used to wrap mine around the pillion handle. I thought about leaving the chain at work as Bendy says, and still reckon that is the easiest idea. But all of the above options sound good. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to buy these items and locks from online? I'd go to a shop but I'm lazy Wink

I use one of those square bags on the pilion seat...though I've somehow lost one of the straps!

you can get tankbags on ebay for £25 easy, i got a really good one (fair enough it looks pants) i have used it constantly since getting it, easyer to use and loads of space in them, also you can lean on it on longer journeys Smile i keep my tools and other bit in there too, the best thing i've ever brought for the bike, a weekends worth of stuff in one bag.

I'll be picking up one of the pillion seat bags soon as they seem like the best option. The (non-existent) aerodynamics won't be affected so much by a bag that sits behind my fat ass. Wink
