Help with a laptop.....

I've never worked on a laptop before, some blokes give me his and told me it doesn't work...

so got it home, it boots to the POST and gives 2 beeps. if i'm not mistaken then that's a ram error right?

where do I get to the ram to test/change it?

PS it also gets to this part and the keyboards unresponsive, so is a USB keyboard, i'm guessing it's an old BIOS that doesn't work with USB keyboards.

right, took the rear ram out, still 2 beeps.

took the front ram out and swapped it with the rear. still 2 beeps.

removed the HD and reseated, still 2 beeps.

next?

keyboard won't work at all, tried a G11 USB keyboard too.

checked the keyboard ribbon too. Thumbs Up

Check the CMOS battery, clean it with a soft damp cloth, then refit. Better yet, make a note of the number and replace it.

While you're waiting for the new battery, give the inside a good dig out and clean it up - use a small, soft brush and a can of compressed air. Check every connection for bent, loose or missing pins.

When it's stuck at that prompt, does it switch off with a single brief tap of the power button?

Is the main battery able to hold a charge at all?

Edit: I assume it doesn't have a PS/2 port? I've not had that mitac chassis come through work so it's not one I'm familiar with Sad

As mentioned the CMOS battery is likely to be shagged.

As far as the keyboard goes do the key's feel sticky. I suspect a can of coke or a cup of coffee. Laughing

have you taken the keyboard off at all or made sure its attached properly to the MB. Some one might have had ago already at removing it and buggered it up. CMOS settings suggest the battery is defo dead so get a new one in there. Then try using the keyboard.
