 |
|
EDIT.. Plans changed.. original plan was to buy another DT to use offroad and supermoto my DTRE but use the offroad DTR while I do the DTRE > DTX conversion.. Now im keeping the DTRE as a run-a-bout and supermoto the DTR since its quicker and imo more fun to ride especially with the power delivery of a pegged ypvs.
Old plan
Bought my 2004 re as a cat c writeoff in May 05 for £900 with just 4200 miles on it, by July it was back on the road after I spent about £300 getting it near to new (apart from the rear mudguard and tank which stil show its war wounds)..
Now Sep 08 its at 20k miles and has been ridden almost daily and the only thing on the engine Ive had to replace is the head gasket! and of course spark plugs.. Now its been off-road, jumped, binned on a roadabout, crashed into invisible moorland bumps and allsorts and to be honest. Its done me so well that im going to rebuild it but this time its going to be supermoto.. basically a DT125X..
so first off..
get alternative form of transport.... what better than one of these....
https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008/08/28/bikepics-1399931-800.jpg
12month tax and mot (daytime mot at that but getting lights on it is no problem).. £600!..result..
Now thats a full dep system sorted for my dt125re rebuild, got the original excel dt125x wheels with good pirelli sport tyres and discs (£125! result!), got a near mint original brembo dt125x front caliper, mint dt125x tank, mint rear shock and mint original forks (seems the newer forks have bad chroming on the stanchions and my peeled off completely by the fork clamps!)
Pretty much got everything I need apart from all new handlebars (renthal supermotos's), grips, swingarm linkage, seat or seat cover, body panels, custom front caliper mount (engineering mate sorting that from tool steel) or original dt125x forks which is the expensive but easier route, chain and sprockets and finally brake pads..
So as soon as Ive paid the £600 I borrowed to buy my other dt, which I just couldnt turn down, I will be stripping the dt125re down, powdercoating the frame, engine mount bracket, fork clamps, swingarm, footpegs and sidestand..
then... new topend and no doubt re-bore, possible new crank (6k miles of bumstart abuse after elec start died somewhere at 14k miles. Suspect bushes are worn in the starter motor.. yamaha and their infinate wisdom took away the kickstart in the new model!.. so while the bottom end is split, new main bearings, seals, new clutch and springs, fit a kickstart from a 2003 engine, new reeds
and air filter..
so after I get the powdercoated parts and engine rebuilt I can start putting it all together again and getting the last of the parts like handlebars, panels, chain and sprockets etc..
This is gonna be a long one but im aiming for summer 09..
how its gonna look

definately... ive ridden a wr250f (thats been tuned to almost a yz250) and a drz400e and yes they were animals but there nothing more fun that ragging the absolute crap out of a fairly quick 125.. the 07 ktm 125sx was for me, the most fun bike ive ridden! and at about 30bhp it can keep up with most 250 4t's!
im 24 and ive got 3 yam 125's and I would never part with them.. plus the fact that parts and consumables for my DT's are cheap as chips.. i mean... chain a sprox (jt and did) they are only £35, wheels are £30 a pop, tyres £35 each... the list goes on... ____________________ 04' DT125RE (run-a-bout) // 89' DT125R (rebuilt + supermoto conversion)

the vee rubber tyres are michelin copies.. something like the ac1o's.. All my mates rate them and they ride bigger bikes.. Also a 120/90 rear will fit no proplem. I got a massive tyre and it fits fine. Just beware if you have new chain and sprox because the tyre will then be closer to the rear shock so it rubs on the shock mud flap! Thats why you cant fit 120/110's etc
also the plan is to run the 89 dt offroad since there are way more parts for them on ebay and the dt125re is gonna be supermoto'd.. Since il have a caliper bracket made for the dt125re I'll be able to put the supermoto wheels on the 89' dt whenever ____________________ 04' DT125RE (run-a-bout) // 89' DT125R (rebuilt + supermoto conversion)

found myself a source of parts for the 89 dt.. soon I will getting a apparent dead 2002 engine (something about a bearing? im suspecting main bearings since the topend is apparently ok), dep tail pipe, seat, airbox, carb, wheels, mx tyres, triple clamps, master cylinders and hopefully another set of renthals.. gotta love mates
gonna strip it and paint the frame again then rebuild with the parts from the 2002 dt.. The 02 engine I'll probably rebuild/tune later on I dunno.
once ive sorted the lil problems with the old dt i'll use that for work while I start supermoto my dtre ____________________ 04' DT125RE (run-a-bout) // 89' DT125R (rebuilt + supermoto conversion)

happy bunny today... £150 lighter and ive got a set of 2001 wheels and michelin mx tyres + new rear disc, throttle, cable, progrip grips, renthal bars + pad, front mastercylinder and complete airbox, battery holder, mudflap and new airfilter. I didnt get the engine as the guy wants to split it to get more money... I'll salvage the bottom end when he cant sell it (shagged main bearings) and then get the gear lever shaft and left sidecasing (metal... the older ones are plastic!)
anyway stripping the 89' dt125r then spray the frame/swingarm (going to be layering on the laquer!!) then rebuilding with the new parts I just got. I have spare forks from my dt125re since the fork seals are shagged on the original 89' forks and then its just a new set of chain and sprockets (hopefully 520 conversion ), new front and back brake levers, front brake hose and thats it...
Saw my mates dt125r that he is rebuilding converting to supermoto and it looks sweet. makes me want to supermoto my dt125r instead......
anyway pics very soon.. ____________________ 04' DT125RE (run-a-bout) // 89' DT125R (rebuilt + supermoto conversion)

not been in the garage all week since ive changed shifts and I dont have any lights to work with (till I get my generator back of the old man) but hopefully I'l be spending a day on the weekend pulling more bits off.
If I still cant get the rear axle out then I'll be hacksawing it off, then i'll hopefully taking off the swingarm and respraying that.. The bottom fork clamp has 3 sheared bolts (previous person used crappy bolts to fit the front mudguard so thats going off to my mate to be drilled then re-tapped..Then off with the front pipe and engine and then the frame will be ready for respraying... I want to get it powdercoated but its a £100 job and I could use that money for other things i.e a top end rebuild on my dt125re so i'll just rattle can the frame til the next rebuild.. I get the feeling I might regret it but we will see... It might be alrite if I layer enough laquer on it...

im fitting dt125x wheels.. rear bolts right on (same hub) but the front I need to make up a caliper bracket since im using the standard forks with the dt125x caliper (brembo twinpot)..
anyway an update.. no pics since my w850i is crap at taking pics in the dark but anyways...
sidecasing, oil pump cover repainted (silver..awaiting laquer)..
Cleaned nearly the whole of the engine. no more oil and grime.. polished up the right sidecasing some more.. Replaced barrel/manifold nuts for zinc plated ones.. Oil pump needs a new pully (slighly damaged)..
Lower fork clamp had all 4 bolts drilled out then retapped and resprayed/laquered.
Top fork clamp has new bolts (allen head bolts from 2t sheet metal pressing tool)
Stripped frame completely. Started treating rust and prepped for primer
rear axle removed after I hacksawed it off. Axle was seized sold into caliper mount so I had to remove the disc (with bonus x2 rounded bolts that I hacksawed slots into and then attacked with impact driver)
footpegs. engine mounting plates. sidestand, swingarm linkages, engine mount bolts, front brake hose clamp and various other nuts and bolts waiting to be zinc coated
Only need a few small items now.. Petrol cap, front/break brake hose clamps/guide and front hose (would like a braided tho), rear chain adjusters, new chain and sprockets (520 conversion), chain rollers and maybe a new chain guide ..
progress is slow.. kids and women..
more soon and hopefully with pics! ____________________ 04' DT125RE (run-a-bout) // 89' DT125R (rebuilt + supermoto conversion)
