One in five teachers would like to see the cane brought back in schools, a survey has found.

The deterioration of pupils' behaviour was the main reason teachers were in favour of corporal punishment being brought back.

The Times Educational Supplement (TES) survey of 6,162 teachers found that those in secondary schools were more in favour of it than their primary school counterparts (22% compared to 16%)

Overall, 20.3% supported "the right to use corporal punishment in extreme cases". The idea was less popular with heads and deputy and assistant heads, with just 12% favouring the idea, the TES reported.

Supply teacher Judith Cookson told the TES said: "There are too many anger management people and their ilk who give children the idea that it is their right to flounce out of lessons for time out because they have problems with their temper.

"They should be caned instead."

And primary teacher Ravi Kasinathan said: "There is justification, or an argument, for bringing back corporal punishment, if only as a deterrent.

"I believe some children just don't respond to the current sanctions."

Just thought I would throw this in here as I have it on another forum and its an interesting discussion.

so what do you think?

seen this on the news this morning Laughing
cant see most teachers feeling comfortable with that especially in the London area..i think having a cain in the class room in its self would pose more of a threat to the teachers than foul mouth kids currently do Laughing

I'd say 'no'. We haven't had corporal punishment in Finnish schools since the 1940s and we behave. Well, apart from those who go on shooting sprees...

I blame the parents and media. Too many parents are not showing a good example to their children, and the media is full of people behaving badly without any consequences. Very few children are born bad.

Disagree.

Sends entirely the wrong signal to the kids; 'do as I say or I will beat you.'

If only as a deterrent? One thing kids do respond to is to never make threats you're not prepared to carry out. If you say 'if you do that, I will do this.' If you then do nothing, You lose all credibility.

Something needs to be done, but not this.

good point, if some children where disaplined at home they may not have to be in school as they would know what they would get when they went home. i dont fancy my kid being beat with a cane in school and especially if the teacher gets really voilent and abuses his/her power I would probably cane them back again. But I would make dam well sure my kid didnt recieve punishments for bad behavior and put a stop to it.

Also if teachers where likely to cane they probably would get stabbed or attacked back again in some places. I dont really know what punishment or help to give to be honest as it does start at home not at school.

they cant birng it back anyway with the amount of kids suing their parents for abuse for smacking their arses. Rolling Eyes

Hi

Maybe allow the heads to cane the parents for their kids misbehaviour.

Parents refuse then the kids are excluded from school Twisted Evil .

Even the kids at primary school already know that the teachers can do nothing. The teacher has no real power. Sure they can tell the kid to get out, but nothing much they can do when they refuse.

All the best

I say yes, or something else.

I suspect a lot teachers wouldn't like to do it but it is need for some kids, although I am sure they will claim "arh m8 hit us wit dat n i will sue ur pantz off"

It has now become one of my pet hates, looking back on school if some people weren't dicking around we'd have much better teaching, if they don't want to learn then they shouldn't stop others, kick them out of the lesson. And let them fail, once they realise what they have to do to learn then they can re-sit what ever they need.

Hi

School friend of mine did a teacher training course and landed up doing his real classroom time (to validate his qualification) at a Belfast primary school in the mid 1990s.

His comment was that the kids knew that the teachers had no power at all. He wasn't allowed to even send them to stand in the corner. And any kind of punishment could result in the parents taking it out on the teachers.

Neighbour here is a primary school teacher. For parent / teacher evenings now they have all the teachers in one location rather than in their own classrooms due to problems with threats and violence from parents.

All the best

Keith

As mad_man said, I think if you start caning secondary school kids you stand a chance of probably getting stabbed by one of the little shits further down the line.

I also think its true that kids have clocked onto the fact that teachers are largely powerless, see, when I was at primary school they could do shit like smack you around the legs, wash you rmouth out with soap, or even just shake the shit out of you. It scared/hurt you enough to stop but did no lasting damage. But of course, the morons that scream out for PC and human rights etc etc put a stop to all of that, and all teachers are left with is a "naughty step" for the younger ones, or a "get out of the class" for the older ones (who largely see that as a bonus).

I think it would be much more suitable to have a system whereby if you flunk school you are automatically shipped off to national service for 2 years or so, wherein you learn a trade that interests you, but you also get a foot up the arse so you dont spend the rest of your days as a completely uneducated useless piece of shit.

That way, those who want to learn will do well, and even those people that dont do well in school, or school just isnt for them, get themselves a qualification thats relevant.

Might work, but will we ever see it? Doubtful, for those PC/human rights people would burst a colon at that monstrous idea.

I think if an adult hasn't got the intelligence to get round a child they shouldn't be in that job. If as an adult you have to resort to physical violence to punish a child, (yours or otherwise) you should either be sacked and neutered accordingly.

There is a time and a place for it I suppose (one of those right/wrong/necessary things) but not as a punishment in school. It might've worked in the past, but if you brought it back now, it would be seen as an escalation by the young folk. I think you would see school heads being stabbed.

Thumbs Up but Thumbs Down to the whole being stabbed thing...

Given the problem half the time is the parents, it is a bit late to neuter them.

The kids know the teachers have no power. And the kids know the consequences of them doing what they like are minimal.

Given the speed and regularity these problem-parents manufacture sprogs, I still think neutering is a valid idea. Laughing As to the second point, agreed. But caning in many ways, is worse than doing nothing.

I sometimes think I can sound dead wishy-washy when it comes to this topic, I do believe in positive role models, in analysing the problems, in sitting down and 'working things out.' But I also sometimes think, give the wee shite a slap. and be done with it.

But through out, its down to two things, the kid and the parents. I've known kids who I could just tell were going to go off the rails, yet the parents were what you would call good. I've also known good kids with shit parents who go off the rails, I think my wishy-washy approach works best with these ones... Fortunately, most are somewhere in between.

Thumbs Up

Alot of social workers I blame also as I have mates with kids who cause trouble but they have ADHD and where told to ignore their bad behavior as it was an illness Question I dont agree with that because looking at their kid and talking to him there is nothing wong with him I can see apart from not getting enough attention from parents.

but so many parents are told to ignore bad behavior now by therepists etc. Even my parents where told to ignore my sisters behavior of serious autism and she has just put a window through in bad temper. My parents where not like this with me and my brother and we didnt do anything bad. The threat of diappointing my parents or angering them scared me off doing anything.

Think when it gets to the caning stage it is too late. Don't think it is the cane that should be the deterrent, instead it should be the threat of the cane.

The problem with threats is you have to carry them out though, with kids you just can't say you'll cane them then not do it if they step out of line, so its a wee bit moot.

I worked for social work for four years with a lad with ADD. Its incredibly hard to diagnose, took us over a year. The social worker didn't agree with 'labeling' the kid but with out it, no ritalin; and that shit worked a treat on him, it really was like night and day. Cool

Its a wee bit of a misrepresentation to say 'ignore bad behaviour,' its more a case of choosing your battles. You kinda have to shift alot of minor things like sweary out bursts into a lower punishment category, its really awkward on siblings though. (Kinda what the government does with criminal behaviour... Wink )

I can confirm ADHD* is an illness though, its a hell of a thing too. The trouble is, pushy parents jumping on the bandwagon using it as an excuse for their kid's behaviour. Its rarely the case they have it, the lad I knew had brain scans and all sorts of tests to diagnose it and even then, the consultant hummed and hawed because he wasn't hyperactive.

I knew another kid who had it, we had him away for a week to camp and his parents didn't give him his medication away because it 'embarassed' them. He was a total shite all week and only I really understood why. Incidentally, he's homeless now, if his mother hadn't systematically denied the existence of his problem, I wonder how he would've turned out.

Anyway, I digress. Caning? Meh! Tar and feather them!! Cool

Thumbs Up

* In ADD/ADHD patients there is a lack of activity in the frontal lobes of the brain. This is the part that regulates behaviour, it sort of says 'should I do this?' Conversely, ritalin which is a stimulant (which you wouldn't normally give to someone who may already be hyperactive) stimulates that part of the brain. It allows the sufferer to 'reason' more before they act.

Yes, but it should be the ultimate sanction and as such virtually never required. At the level of maybe 1 kid a year getting it at a school, and combined with other things at the same time (such as exclude them from the school so they are not around to boast about it). And as such at a level where the threat of it is the deterrent.

Just throwing it around as a threat is pointless. It should be such a large step that the threat of it doesn't need to be mentioned.

All the best

The problem being is that we stopped the cane.
We have too many people spouting hate for anyone in authority and saying revolt, even if they only say it on websites behind their keyboards and wouldn't be able to revolt in the way they rant.
kids do not know who or what to respect. They may not respect the person but they should respect the position that they are in.
That has all been lost by the spewing of hatred by the keyboard warriors.
The kids only know their rights and not their responsibilities.
They need to earn their rights by doing what they are responsible for.

I see what you mean.

As I said before, as with all sorts of things in life, its never really case of right or wrong, sometimes things are just necessary.

We've sat up late while camping and developed many elaborate ways of punishing the kids when they misbehave. We always settle on remote control implants that give electric shocks to various parts of the body. The intensity and locality of the shock is dictated by the gravity of the misdemeanor, we even thought about some sort of voice/behaviour recognition software to automate the process but decided we'd probably enjoy doing it ourselves anyway.

Don't know what kind of picture I'm painting of myself here, suffice to say, its all said in good humour... Honestly... No really, it is... Wink

This social worker told me to my face when my sister was smashing up an entire room and damaging furniture! my wall in my livingroom has holes in it which I had to replaster over her. She sat there and sat shut the door and ignore her. Shocked Same was said to my friends son who also used to visit my house and smash my xbox controls and other things. And she ignored it. Confused I dont think thats one bit right or an excuse for bad behavior. If she had of told him not to do it he may not actually do it except no one has tried as they ignore it now.

I just think if parents disapline their kids rather than ignore that behavior it may not be as bad as it gets to now. By passing it off as ADD or similar and that they cant do nothig about it is puzzling to me.
Oh and there is such a thing as you discribed I think most are mis diagnosed and let to do as they please without being told whats right and wrong as no one bothers to tell them.

My kids were not given the chance to develop ADD/ADHD. If they did wrong they got smacked at an early age. I have not needed to smacked my son who is nearly 14 for about 8-9 years now. all the discipline the hard way was done early so I don't need to do it now. if he does do wrong I just need to chat with him now. he knows I could smack him if he went past a line and he knows where that line is. My daughter who is 11 is the same.
I am tolerant on many things though and don't try to dictate to them but come to a common goal and a mutual pleasing outcome.

I can't believe what I'm hearing from you so-called adults.

Shocked

Have we learned nothing in the last 30 years? It's mind-boggling to think that you people would condone beating a small child with a stick to get them to "conform".

Shocked

Are we living in the Dark Ages? Are we no better than cave-dwellers?

Shocked

Taser the little shits, I say. Make technology work for us for a change.

Inclusion ,NOT when other children are getting hurt ,borstall is what they need .
oh and the shit wasent even sent home for the afternoon.
both my wife and myself work in schools and we could tell you some real horror stories (she mostly her school is an inner city school)

We still had scum and thieves coming out of the schooling system when they had the cane.

I went to a very scrict, old fashioned prep school (in the early-mid 1990s). The cane was a distant memory for even the oldest teachers, yet no one ever put a step out of line. This was because we'd get an ear bashing, have to go stand in the corner, etc.

However, I still got the occasional smack at home. Few things are more effective in keeping a kid in line than making him scared of his mum.

Lack of corporal punishment is not the problem. 3rd generation dole scum being paid to breed is a problem, where we're at a point where even the kid's grandparents have no concept of authority.

Let them fuck around. Lots of cheap, stupid unskilled labour for me to take advantage of. Would be amusing if we stopped paying them to breed, imagine the bleating that would come out of the estates.
