seen this on the news this morning
cant see most teachers feeling comfortable with that especially in the London area..i think having a cain in the class room in its self would pose more of a threat to the teachers than foul mouth kids currently do |

I'd say 'no'. We haven't had corporal punishment in Finnish schools since the 1940s and we behave. Well, apart from those who go on shooting sprees...
I blame the parents and media. Too many parents are not showing a good example to their children, and the media is full of people behaving badly without any consequences. Very few children are born bad. ____________________ My other bike's a Monster... |

Maybe allow the heads to cane the parents for their kids misbehaviour.
Parents refuse then the kids are excluded from school .
Even the kids at primary school already know that the teachers can do nothing. The teacher has no real power. Sure they can tell the kid to get out, but nothing much they can do when they refuse.
All the best

I couldnt believe when someone told me here kids where being exspelled from primary school! 4 times for one who was suspendied for voilence on a teacher. Already! wtf? no one was ever bad in my primary school it was all happy. Must be a serious generation gap already forming. |

I say yes, or something else.
I suspect a lot teachers wouldn't like to do it but it is need for some kids, although I am sure they will claim "arh m8 hit us wit dat n i will sue ur pantz off"
It has now become one of my pet hates, looking back on school if some people weren't dicking around we'd have much better teaching, if they don't want to learn then they shouldn't stop others, kick them out of the lesson. And let them fail, once they realise what they have to do to learn then they can re-sit what ever they need. ____________________ Past: Honda x8rs, Honda City fly, Honda Hornet 250, Honda VFR750, Yamaha xt600e.

Hi
School friend of mine did a teacher training course and landed up doing his real classroom time (to validate his qualification) at a Belfast primary school in the mid 1990s.
His comment was that the kids knew that the teachers had no power at all. He wasn't allowed to even send them to stand in the corner. And any kind of punishment could result in the parents taking it out on the teachers.
Neighbour here is a primary school teacher. For parent / teacher evenings now they have all the teachers in one location rather than in their own classrooms due to problems with threats and violence from parents.
All the best

As mad_man said, I think if you start caning secondary school kids you stand a chance of probably getting stabbed by one of the little shits further down the line.
I also think its true that kids have clocked onto the fact that teachers are largely powerless, see, when I was at primary school they could do shit like smack you around the legs, wash you rmouth out with soap, or even just shake the shit out of you. It scared/hurt you enough to stop but did no lasting damage. But of course, the morons that scream out for PC and human rights etc etc put a stop to all of that, and all teachers are left with is a "naughty step" for the younger ones, or a "get out of the class" for the older ones (who largely see that as a bonus).
I think it would be much more suitable to have a system whereby if you flunk school you are automatically shipped off to national service for 2 years or so, wherein you learn a trade that interests you, but you also get a foot up the arse so you dont spend the rest of your days as a completely uneducated useless piece of shit.
That way, those who want to learn will do well, and even those people that dont do well in school, or school just isnt for them, get themselves a qualification thats relevant.
Might work, but will we ever see it? Doubtful, for those PC/human rights people would burst a colon at that monstrous idea.

I think if an adult hasn't got the intelligence to get round a child they shouldn't be in that job. If as an adult you have to resort to physical violence to punish a child, (yours or otherwise) you should either be sacked and neutered accordingly.
There is a time and a place for it I suppose (one of those right/wrong/necessary things) but not as a punishment in school. It might've worked in the past, but if you brought it back now, it would be seen as an escalation by the young folk. I think you would see school heads being stabbed.
but to the whole being stabbed thing... ____________________ Didn't catch anything. |

Given the problem half the time is the parents, it is a bit late to neuter them.
The kids know the teachers have no power. And the kids know the consequences of them doing what they like are minimal.
All the best

Given the speed and regularity these problem-parents manufacture sprogs, I still think neutering is a valid idea. As to the second point, agreed. But caning in many ways, is worse than doing nothing.
I sometimes think I can sound dead wishy-washy when it comes to this topic, I do believe in positive role models, in analysing the problems, in sitting down and 'working things out.' But I also sometimes think, give the wee shite a slap. and be done with it.
But through out, its down to two things, the kid and the parents. I've known kids who I could just tell were going to go off the rails, yet the parents were what you would call good. I've also known good kids with shit parents who go off the rails, I think my wishy-washy approach works best with these ones... Fortunately, most are somewhere in between.

Alot of social workers I blame also as I have mates with kids who cause trouble but they have ADHD and where told to ignore their bad behavior as it was an illness I dont agree with that because looking at their kid and talking to him there is nothing wong with him I can see apart from not getting enough attention from parents.
but so many parents are told to ignore bad behavior now by therepists etc. Even my parents where told to ignore my sisters behavior of serious autism and she has just put a window through in bad temper. My parents where not like this with me and my brother and we didnt do anything bad. The threat of diappointing my parents or angering them scared me off doing anything. |

The problem with threats is you have to carry them out though, with kids you just can't say you'll cane them then not do it if they step out of line, so its a wee bit moot.
I worked for social work for four years with a lad with ADD. Its incredibly hard to diagnose, took us over a year. The social worker didn't agree with 'labeling' the kid but with out it, no ritalin; and that shit worked a treat on him, it really was like night and day.
Its a wee bit of a misrepresentation to say 'ignore bad behaviour,' its more a case of choosing your battles. You kinda have to shift alot of minor things like sweary out bursts into a lower punishment category, its really awkward on siblings though. (Kinda what the government does with criminal behaviour... )
I can confirm ADHD* is an illness though, its a hell of a thing too. The trouble is, pushy parents jumping on the bandwagon using it as an excuse for their kid's behaviour. Its rarely the case they have it, the lad I knew had brain scans and all sorts of tests to diagnose it and even then, the consultant hummed and hawed because he wasn't hyperactive.
I knew another kid who had it, we had him away for a week to camp and his parents didn't give him his medication away because it 'embarassed' them. He was a total shite all week and only I really understood why. Incidentally, he's homeless now, if his mother hadn't systematically denied the existence of his problem, I wonder how he would've turned out.
Anyway, I digress. Caning? Meh! Tar and feather them!!
* In ADD/ADHD patients there is a lack of activity in the frontal lobes of the brain. This is the part that regulates behaviour, it sort of says 'should I do this?' Conversely, ritalin which is a stimulant (which you wouldn't normally give to someone who may already be hyperactive) stimulates that part of the brain. It allows the sufferer to 'reason' more before they act. ____________________ Didn't catch anything. |

I see what you mean.
As I said before, as with all sorts of things in life, its never really case of right or wrong, sometimes things are just necessary.
We've sat up late while camping and developed many elaborate ways of punishing the kids when they misbehave. We always settle on remote control implants that give electric shocks to various parts of the body. The intensity and locality of the shock is dictated by the gravity of the misdemeanor, we even thought about some sort of voice/behaviour recognition software to automate the process but decided we'd probably enjoy doing it ourselves anyway.
Don't know what kind of picture I'm painting of myself here, suffice to say, its all said in good humour... Honestly... No really, it is...

I can't believe what I'm hearing from you so-called adults.
Have we learned nothing in the last 30 years? It's mind-boggling to think that you people would condone beating a small child with a stick to get them to "conform".
Are we living in the Dark Ages? Are we no better than cave-dwellers?
Taser the little shits, I say. Make technology work for us for a change.
