'Part 2' of that Zeitgeist movie that was (semi) popular around here has been released.

https://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7065205277695921912

I hope that we can all sit down and watch it (I am currently in the process of doing so), and give our rational, unbiased opinions of what it says.

Alright, clearly no one else wants to get the ball rolling, so I'll start;

Resource based economy... workable?

I think so. But not without our current ways of life disintegrating... at least for a while.

I liked this one a tad better than the first one, because it seemed more sincere. The first one was a bit more interesting because it had that "conspiracy" element about it, which I quite enjoy if im honest. Addendum had a more real feel to it I think, like at the end you just realise that there is seriously something wrong with the way things are going and the difference is we can see this happening in front of our very eyes, every time you switch on the tv or look at the headlines (Bradford and bingely being a prime example). I think maybe again the director/maker may have skimmed over a few of the finer points, but I can understand that in order to pack into a short space of time without going into a finance/economics lecture that many wont understand or care to for that matter.

Resource based economy? Sign me up for sure. The thing is to make such a thing work you are for sure going to have to overthrow the worldwide government and the oil companies. If some of the things stated in Addendum are to be believed such people would have no trouble in bringing about the execution of any pioneers of such a civilization, so you will need many martyr's before anything even begins to happen. To this end I believe it would result in the army bringing forth martial law and literally slaughtering anyone trying to rally for this idea to be put forth (peruse the ever increasing 'anti-terrorist' laws for evidence that their supposed 'right' to proceed with such methods for your 'protection' is just).

On the flip side, it would seem from one point of view that if the events proposed in Addendum do play out as predicted, then surely a resource based economy is the only way forward? If there is universal collapse in the banking/financial economy, what alternative is left? If all your money is useless, whats the point of having money?

I think it would take a major re-adjusting of peoples selfish nature as well, monetary rewards are hard-wired incentives for anyone to do anything, the concept of working, even for free housing, energy, food, etc is very foreign to what everyone is used to, so I think people would sit around for too long deliberating the pro's and cons rather than actually physically making an attempt at making such a concept work - as the main proponent states himself "My system isnt perfect by far, its just a hell of a lot better than what we're in now".

It'll be interesting to see what pops up on that zeitgeist movement website that becomes active on the 10th, I'll give it a browse for definite.

Absolutely, but I think this system makes far too much sense. We've been taught to believe that when we create something, or provide a service, we have to sell it to another human in society, to cover our own costs. However, we ALSO have to add on a bit more, called 'profit'.

It is the idea of profit that causes the gross imbalance in society - an imbalance which anyone can plainly see is only increasing as time continues. Don't let the technological advances seen in the past few decades fool you into thinking we're all 'richer'. In fact, if we were to do away with the idea of profit, hence the rich, and hence class, technology would stampede ahead. My personal opinion is that the monetary system that we accept today is going to take humanity into what I can only call a new 'Dark Age', which will take hundreds of years (and countless lives) for us to escape from, if we indeed ever do. Much like the previous Dark Age, thanks to society being so unquestioning to authority and allowing the Vatican to hold such an iron grip over Europe because our lives back then were based on religion. Exactly the same thing is happening today, only the banks will soon hold an iron grip over the world because our lives are based on money.

I've watched some of the Addendum and while I get the money is debt stuff they seem to be claiming that NO money is real, it's all just fabricated out of thin air.

Money is a physical representation of both physical material and physical work. It's a means of putting objects and sweat into your pocket. Personal debt is where you take value on the promise of providing future sweat. THAT is REAL money.

Debt allows you to borrow sweat you haven't yet shed so you can buy objects now that you otherwise wouldn't have immediate sweat to cover.

It also forces people to proritize their material desires..."shall I have a car or a boat, I can't afford both." Without money as a system of regulation everyone would want at least one of everything, and there simply isn't enough material or man-power to provide that kind of largesse.

The point that it's trying to make, in my view, is that as time goes on, human 'sweat' as you put it, is being outclassed by our own machines.

In turn, the current economy doesn't work as the majorities 'sweat' becomes worth less and less when there are machines that will sweat for a fraction of the cost.

Thus, the current system is strangling technology. And if 'cost' were not an issue, then a huge amount of resources would be opened up.

Money only exists while it has a worth. That worth being as tool to grease the cogs of the barter system. It only has worth and a reality as long as we all agree that the currency is equivalent to an amount of toil and that toil is equal to the object that you want.
If on a Desert island it would not matter how much money, gold diamond etc you had if the people on that island didn't need or recognise those things as having worth.

There's a whole bunch of convoluted stuff involved. We could all live in a mud hut, with a patch of land on which to grow our food and growing that would be all the work we'd need to do. But then what? Sit and watch the birdies flying around? A stereo would pass the time, but how many man-hours to make one of those? Swap one for potatoes, of an equal worth? Stereo takes 50 hours to make, how many spuds in 50 hours of labour?

Money quantifies worth. It's only real problem is it facilitates the dominance of a minority of useless shiftless parasites who think their hour of labour is worth thousands more than that of the majority. Worse than that, they then go on to positions of power where they completely lose touch with reality and start huge wars. And stuff.

Everyones hour should be of the same worth as everyone elses. Street-cleaner, surgeon, whatever. You become what you can by virtue of your abilities and get paid the same for your 40 hours per week. The reward is in the job satisfaction, not the inordinate amount of wealth it affords you.

But human nature doesn't work that way. Everyone wants to be the top dog with special privilages and status. Ego messing with everyones minds. Greed, not just for money and power but for approbation in the other persons eyes. Or fear.

Human beings, in general, are vile ratty little shites. But it's when they get to the top that they really start stinking to high heaven, with very few exceptions.

The only true solution to the human condition is outright extermination. That or a fvcking miracle.

So if we all got paid the same, where would my motivation be to become an organiser of people, to take charge? Some jobs you walk in punch your card then at the end of the day punch your card out and that's it. Others are responsible 24/7 for what goes on even when they are not in work or at their work station
The surgeon does need the cleaner to keep the theatre clean for him to work in but the surgeon has put more effort into his trade and has more responsibility. Both are linked to the well being of others, but aptitude and knowledge are at the two ends of the spectrum.

Since the dawn of time human ingenuity has worked for one thing - to make life easier for ourselves. This is what technology strives to achieve, and what it should continue to achieve.

Manufacturing, maintenance, cleaning, even surgery and nanotechnology. All are capable of being performed by robots, and this is from within our narrow view of the current age. In a hundred years, technology will be capable of doing things that humans today cannot even fathom in their wildest dreams.

A world where we do not have to work to survive is very achieveable thanks to our engineering skills, and indeed it is what man has worked for since he first shaped a flint, and invented the wheel.

The idea is, in a world where we do not have to work to survive, our wants and needs will obviously change. You will have all the time of your life to do what humans do best; create.

If you create a painting, you will get joy from sharing that painting with others, instead of selling it to them. If I were to program an awesome video game, I would get joy from sharing to every other person, as I have no need to sell it. Ultimately, technology could not be held back because of 'cost', and would no doubt see a very large amount of humans become scientists, as that is truly the only way to hope to gain any understanding of why we are all here.

Every hurdle that we see in today's society is fixable by technology - technology is what has fixed every problem that humans have faced in the past and it will continue to do so. Politics solves nothing, it just creates more problems.

What ColdInsomnia said.

If your material needs are met regardless, why would you choose to be a surgeon instead of a theatre-cleaner? Fulfillment, satisfaction, sense of self-worth, etc etc etc.

More effort? More responsibility? More bollocks. So a surgeon has to concentrate, a floor-sweeper doesn't. So what? Is one hour of concentration more tiring than one hour of pushing a broom down endless corridors?

Of course there are many jobs that are inherently dangerous, but there are just as many people who WANT to do them because of their own particular motivations. Ditto dirty jobs. And if a culture of recognition is established money can be replaced.

But as CI says, technology will replace humans for work. Then we'll all be creatures of pure leisure...then what? Status within PC games will be of more importance than staus of money in the 'real' world. Status of what you're able to create, for beauty or utility, each will have it's own cachet.

The system we have now is a dirty ugly sh1thouse, and those at the top who think they're somehow superior for presiding over it are about as deluded as any supposedly intelligent creature can be. Masters of the cess-pit...yeah, they're real winners, ain't they. Rolling Eyes

I'd imagine that those of you who have seen the movie will already be aware of this, but for those that aren't, the Zeitgeist Movement is up and running. If you think what it says in the website makes sense, and you'd like to be part of spreading the message of an alternative world (BLASPHEMY!!!!), consider signing up.

Allow me to quote one of my favourite passages from the website for the criminally lazy;

The Zeitgeist Movement wrote:
The bottom line is that in order to change things for the better fundamentally, you must begin to address root causes. The current societies system of "punishment" is outmoded, inhumane, and unproductive. When a serial killer is caught, most people jump up and down and scream for the death of that person. This is backwards. A truly sane society, which understands what we are and how our value systems are created, would take the individual and learn the reasons behind his or her violent actions. This information would then go to a research department which considers how to stop such conditions from occurring through education.

It is time to stop the patchwork. It is time to begin a new social approach which is updated to present day knowledge. Sadly, society today is still largely based on outmoded, superstitious dispositions and resolutions.

It is also important to point out that there are no utopias or endings. All evidence points to perpetual change on all levels. In turn, it is our personal actions everyday of our lives that mold and perpetuate the social systems we have in place. Yet, paradoxically, it is also our environmental influences which create our perspectives and hence world views. Therefore, true change will come not only from adjusting your personal understandings and decisions, but equally from changing the social structures that influence these understandings and decisions.

The elite power systems are little effected in the long run by traditional protest and political movements. We must move beyond these 'establishment rebellions' and work with a tool much more powerful:
We will stop supporting the system, while constantly advocating knowledge, peace, unity and compassion. We cannot "fight the system". Hate, anger and the 'war' mentality is a failed means for change, for it perpetuates the same tool the corrupt, established power systems use to maintain control to begin with.

The more you think about it, the more it makes sense.

The site has been updated, there's an FAQ available here that answers very many questions about the proposals. Here's a great quote;

Jacque Fresco wrote:
Monotonous and dangerous jobs will inevitably be done away with by the advance of technology. People in a resource-based economy will be given the opportunity to study, travel, work to help others, design, create, etc. - or work in the arts or sciences - if they desire. I find it so sad when people ask, "What will people do?". Their brains have been so flattened that they have no other options in their lives other than a job and in most instances it is one that they do not like. Children, when they are young, are curious about everything and if nurtured they could have a much greater range of interests and abilities. This culture does a wonderful job of limiting peoples' interests, opportunities, and abilities, and it conditions them to be lazy. People are not born that way any more than they are born with bigotry, hatred, prejudice, or particular values. We are aware that it is the environment that shapes people and if the culture is not changed there will be little change in human behavior.

Hi

We already have a resource based economy for some of the population. Generally they get dismissive titles such as dole scroungers.

I agree with Hetzer that money is just a token to exchange effort. But I do not agree that all effort is worth the same. There are some boring and dirty jobs that nobody wants to do, while some interesting jobs that everyone wants to do. Different financial rewards sorts out the difference in supply and demand for these jobs.

All the best

Keith

But ultimately, all of these jobs can and will be replaced, as we have seen happen to professions such as factory workers. Supply and demand is more and more rapidly becoming an outmoded concept. Every single profession; from the stinky toilet cleaners that will be replaced by superior cleaning technology, to the engineers that keep our power plants working will eventually be automated.

With an exponentially increasing population, coupled with a rapidly declining need for human labour - the result in a monetary system is that people still need 'jobs' to support themselves (and pay their taxes).

These jobs are created, as you mentioned in another thread, by over-complex governments and other 'legal' entities which employ people purely for the sake of keeping them employed.

Consider how advanced technology is today to even just 100 years ago, and then consider that we are still using a social structure that is thousands of years old. We are still fighting amongst one another, and the result is that we will inevitably use our technology against ourselves - instead of using it to provide an easier and happier existance.

Hi

Idea is that as people are freed up from menial tasks then they can put their effort into more useful tasks. Not just have their time wasted with pointless tasks, while wasting everyone elses time dealing with them.

If you automate jobs then you save money. If all you do with the saved money is pay it somehow to those who you no longer need to employ then there is no purpose in automating things. Just save the effort, and suffer when someone else can produce the same but more cheaply because they did automate and their ex staff are now doing something useful.

All the best

Please elaborate; as I can see it the only jobs more useful than ones that are currently being phased out are ones that will be phased out in the near future. Thus the trend will continue and more useless beuracracy will be implemented. And what will happen when more and more of the country is 'employed' (using the term loosely) by the ever-expanding government?

Take this to the ultimate end. All labour is automated. Everything you need and want is supplied. House, energy, food, water, clothing, transport, appliances, toys, the lot. Whatever you want, you get.

What then?

I'll take a quote from the FAQ above here that I posted to answer this one;

FAQ wrote:

Q: What will people do?

A: They will engage in all manner of research and development, the creative arts and crafts, travel and exploration, and participation in all of the other limitless horizons the future has to offer. The ultimate realization of the potential of cybernated and computerized technology solely to improve people's lives could produce the most revolutionary system ever to evolve. It will eventually eliminate all superficial boundaries set up by nations; as we are beginning to witness with the introduction of satellite communication and personal computers, it is almost impossible for nations today to censor ideas and information.

You answered your own question:-

Problem has come that jobs are phased out and people have not been retrained. Dumped on the scrap heap with probably a good few decades of life left in them to drain the economy. And the only thing worse is paying them to do something pointless to drain the economy more rapidly, pushing those organisations that can produce something to a cheaper and less regulated area.

All the best

I did not answer my own question. I asked you what jobs would be more useful than the ones currently being phased out.

The "What will people do?" answer is certainly not a job. The closest word I could use to describe it would be a life-long hobby.

So they'll research & develop stuff (what stuff?), paint pretty pictures and explore the Amazon. All seven billion of them.

With zero-point energy, anti-grav and our own saucers I can see there being a point, but without those about all we'll have to do is the same as we do now in our free time. Times 24/7. I suspect life would become a tad more tedious than it is now.

Ah, I know...use computer technology to create virtual worlds in which to play. Hang on...full circle alert!

I did not answer my own question. I asked you what jobs would be more useful than the ones currently being phased out.

Research and development. Exploration. Both useful jobs which will lead to new products which people will want. The alternative is to develop nothing new and keep producing the same stuff and technologically go nowhere (and probably go backwards after a couple of generations).

Plenty of other useful jobs. Sure, produce everything with a CNC machine and you can produce millions with one person doing the programming rather than thousands of people with a lathe. But nothing to stop you doing producing thousands of different variations which can easily be programmed on CNC machines, each specific and more effective for particular solutions. Basically using the same skills and aptitude to produce better products.

All the best

Keith

Well, firstly I think I need to re-iterate that no one is suggesting that this is going to be an overnight change. A change to such a system would undoubtedly cause a huge hiccup and a lot of people could lose their lives, and take a long time to recover from.

But hey, wait a minute, doesn't that sound exactly like a depression? You know, those things we get as a present from the rich every now and again to 'put us in our place'. They're usually accompanied by wars and facist governments.

I don't know what I'd do with life if I didn't have to work. I don't suppose a lot of people would - having worked all their lives and being born into a world that expects you to spend most of your time making someone higher up the ladder than you richer.

There's a lot of stigma around this idea that we wouldn't have to work. Heaven forbid we allow our technology to do what we always intended it to do, and just sit back and enjoy life however we choose to?
