Hi to all,

My aprilia rs can only described as c"ck tease. The little slapper keeps cuttin out mid drive and i reckon i have flooded the spark plug.

Anyone else having problems with their RS?

Cheers

What plug you running
theres the common issue with RS's needing certain plugs to your riding style..

and hows the bike
Restricted to 14.6bhp?
Derestricted to 33bhp?

i know little about bikes, so maybe the rs was a bad idea.

im not sure what plug im using at the moment, im going to buy some today and see what happens. Browsing this site says anything from a br8 to br10?

its deristricted, Evil or Very Mad

I think
br8-restricted
br9-deres more town riding
br10-deres for fast riding, will run shit at tickover and wont idle and that.

The first thing you should do is get a Haynes manual. They are worth every penny and that's how I got through removing and fitting the whole engine with no previous experience. And the bike actually works Very Happy

I thought that level of reliability was only achievable by chinese Honda CG125 clones.

Sounds like your bike was designed simular to Formula 1 cars, engine only designed to run for a couple of races before needing a rebuild, but the benefits are increased power.

Makes you wonder if its cheaper to pass your test and jump on a 33hp 250cc 4 stroke (kawasaki?).

I see what you mean, I have just read the Motorcycle News review.

https://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/bikereviews/searchresults/Bike-Reviews/Aprilia/Aprilia-RS125-2006-current/?&R=EPI-115

It mentions seizures in the engine section and the quality and reliability section.
But as you say when its working its one hell of a bike.

i bought it with cosmetic damage with 500 miles on the clock so thus no warranty. thats how i managed to get it for £1500 from an aprilia dealer i know (and also because they are sponsoring me for racing the rs)

so bloody annoying. Im seriously thinking of fitting a 250 block into it Mr. Green

I must have got a good one.

2500km on it and touch wood not skipped a beat. Last 1000 at full power.

But it is run on the best oil and fuel and always warmed and ridden gently for a few miles. Don't get me wrong it does get ragged once warm but only when warm.

Defo buy a haynes. Worth it's weight in gold.

The rs (and mito) need regular piston rings to keep them reliable, if im not mistaken they are supposed to have new rings every 5000 miles as part of the service.

Nothing wrong with the bikes, plenty wrong with the owners. They make over 250bhp/litre, so they need some looking after.

Keith has owned RS125s for year and has little trouble with them. He knows how to look after bikes.

I fancy an early mito. They look fun.

I know little about bikes and I know I haven't helped my cause by thrashin it.

I've taken off the spark plug, and there is a lot of liquid where the spark plugs go, firstly should this be ok? Secondly for those like me who know nothing about bikes, do not put a lighter over the whole where the spark plug goes!!! BANG!!

The threads look damaged so i might have further spending money problems on the bike.

i have also just bought a rs and am having the same problem, splattering, wet spark plug hole. i'm assuming its getting 2 much gas and is fooding, once it clears throw it has heaps of power up top. 1 tip i have for you is to ride the accurate throw, dont just pin it and wait 4 the motor 2 catch up cos thats when yr pushing 2 much gas in and will stutter

A little optimistic don't you think.

Over 250bhp/litre would mean over 31hp for the little 125cc.

hi,
just to throw some fuel onto the fire...
my last rs was dynoed at 32.something or other bhp.
(with cheap mitaka replacement barrel supposedly "mildly ported",jl exhaust,34mm carb & vectorcone filter)
& once over the initial setting up issues, it never missed a beat.
(oh, & it had around 20000kms on it.)
except when it would stop dead, due to me forgetting to put petrol in it, lol
fuel economy isnt great, especially with the bigger carb & there no fuel guage.
not recomended for a 1st bike though, needs a fair bit of looking after.
& i dont recomend the haynes manual, has a couple of errors in it, much better with the workshop manual (& its free to download!)
always ran it with a br9, as i commuted daily on it, & didnt get a chance to use the pv as often as i would have liked. (used to have to clean the blade every couple of weeks)
cheers,
GAZ
PS :first sign of any problems - stick a new spark plug in, as they go through them quick, especially if carb aint set up right.

Hi,
this is quite common, due to the tank being up & down & the breather gets caught.
rule it out by opening the fuel cap & listen for in rush of air.
my moneys on the plug or carb though.
cheers,
GAZ
