Just to clarify; the Apex is the point you are closest to the edge of the tarmarc; if you're good (better than me) you've got your wheel about 2 inches from the edge of the track here with your knee over the grass.
Though, saying that; An indication you can faster is when you're trying a bit too hard and go over the rumble strip... and don't crash!
The point you start turning is usually described as... 'the turn in point' .
The toes is a good point - you should have the ball of your foot on the peg, with it close in to the bike. This minimises the chance of your foot touching down (it's neither big nor clever).
I would agree that for the moment, you want to probably get the braking over and done with before turning in.
However, if you're 'properly trying' (and people new to the track, please don't try this yet!), this is what you'd want to be doing (in the dry with decent grip):
Just before you start braking, start hanging off.
Brake (so that the rear of the bike is just about to leave the tarmac)
As you get to your turn-in point you should be at the point you can ease off the brakes a bit.
Turn in as sharply as possible (which goes hand in hand with a late turn in point)
After turning in, as you lean over more, slowly release the brakes proportionally, until just before the apex where you fully release them.
Get on the power as you stand the bike up, whacking it fully open (depending on the bike) as soon as possible in relation to the grip you've got.
Getting hold of a copy of 'A Twist of the Wrist II' would be a good start rhone .

Edited for clarification; meant use the front so the rear is just about to lift.
One place that the rear can be used, though I haven't found it made much difference, is to use it just before the front to drop the rear down a bit; this should mean you can brake a little harder before the back comes off the tarmac.
Wouldn't worry about it too much at the mo - when you're braking with the rear just about to hover right to the apex, then tipping in and keeping brakes deep into the corner, maybe it's worth considering stuff like that to push it a little more ... though even when I've been fairly happy with my riding, I've found it's one more thing I don't have time to think about. |
