It's much better than £1.20 a litre. Yes it's expensive compared to the days where petrol was 70p but oil prices were bound to go up.
You can't really blame oil companies, they are running a business afterall and they know even if they charge high prices, people will still buy.

A barrel of oil has fallen from a high of around $147 in July to less than $80, and the firms said they were passing this drop on to customers.

The average price of unleaded petrol in the UK is currently around 117p.

Forgive me if my maths is wrong, but the price of oil has nearly halved, yet we only get ~15% off the price of petrol?

Yeah, thanks Rolling Eyes

Errr, 50p of our fuel is tax about 10p goes to the retailer and maintenance, so how can they halve the price of petrol in correlation with oil prices when nearly half of the price goes to the g'ment or the petrol station itself?

Also the pound has weakened a lot over the past couple of months.

That's because most of what we pay at the pump is tax.

Hi

Bit of rough calculation.

Say Oil was $80 a barrel at £1 = $2 and petrol was 90p a litre, of with 50.035p is duty and then there is VAT. So the non tax part of a litre of fuel was 0.26246p.

Oil is now $80 a barrel at £1 = $1.75. So the untaxed part has gone up by (2 / 1.75), to 0.29995p a litre, which would make the price including tax 94.4p a litre.

So prices are still high even including the change in the exchange rate (and the pound is still worth more against the dollar than it was in 2003).

All the best

Keith

The drop in the price of oil will take quite a bit of time to filter down to the petrol prices, at which point the government will no doubt increase tax a bit more.

Oil prices have dropped again today.

US Light Crude is at $72 a barrel.

North Sea Brent Crude is at $68 a barrel.

Looks like we have not hit the bottom yet either. Some analysts reckon we could go as low as $20 a barrel. Laughing

Suddenly running a car that does an average of 60MPG is going to cost naff all to run. Laughing

Nah, expect tax rises on fuel soon. Surprised the delayed 2p a litre rise in fuel duty hasn't already been implemented.

All the best

Well what I said about drops in oil prices taking a while to filter down to petrol prices could be bollocks:

https://www.google.com/trends?q=oil+price%2C+petrol+price&ctab=0&geo=GB&geor=all&date=mtd&sort=0

Although I don't know google gets it figures from.

Google trends just compares the search volumes for each term.

What you're looking it isn't a comparison of the prices, but how often people type "petrol price" and "oil price" into google.

for instance:

https://www.google.com/trends?q=honda%2C+suzuki%2C+kawasaki%2C+yamaha&ctab=0&geo=GB&geor=all&date=mtd&sort=0

Well I suppose then my hyperinflation theories are sort of blunted though...

Unfortunately this means we get hit by deflation instead , which is just as bad, though 2nd hand bikes will be VERY cheap , and mortgages will effectively increase (rather than decrease from inflation).
