Posted: 14:00 - 15 Oct 2008 Post subject: How to park a CG in a Vauxhall Astra. |
 |
|
Monday morning (13th of October - typical eh?) about 8.00 I decided to treat the No2 son to a ride to school on the back of the CG. (OK, so it wasn't a decision as such, he'd just missed his bus/train so I felt obliged to get him there for half past eight.)
After getting kitted up he stands in the kitchen and utters the immortal line,
"I've never been nor do I ever want to be in a motorbike accident"
Famous last words eh?
I tell him to shut up and stop tempting fate, and we're laughing as we get on the back of Penelope for the 10 minute ride to school.
This is the first time I'd taken Squirt on the back, so I was a little more nervous than normal, and was extra-careful about being smooth.
We manage to get 2/3rds of the way there with no head-butting, no wobbling, anything. So I'm starting to relax a little by this point and when we come to a long straight in a 40mph zone I feel confident in myself enough to filter past a line of stationary traffic.
School runs, They're bad for your health I can tell you.
There's no oncoming traffic and I can see right down to the traffic lights and 30MPH zone at the bottom of the road. Safe enough you may think (at least I did,) so I pootled past the cars in 2nd gear at around 20mph....
As I'm just passed about half of the queue, I see a car pulling it's front end out, I slam on the brakes and horn simultaneously but only having a car and a half's distance to stop, I see the car coming closer and closer, there was honestly nothing more I could do.
Everything seemed to be in slow motion, as we made impact with the drivers side door. By this point I had locked up the rear wheel and the CG had gone side-on into the Astra. my shoulder slammed against the door frame and my arm went through the driver's side window.
I scrambled out of the broken glass to check on Squirt who, interestingly enough was already off the bike. He thought that he had reverse-leap-frogged off just before impact, and as much as I doubted this could have happened I tried to believe it as he was shaken up enough.
After checking Squirt over and making sure he was OK, I tried to speak to the driver who was still sitting there (possibly in shock) covered in glass, but can't recall him answering. I noticed a young girl in the back of the car, who was no older than 14 and she looked scared to death, tears rolling down her cheeks. So I tried to snap the driver out of it by telling him that she was in a state in the back, all he said to her was 'are you OK'.
In the meantime, I had left the CG up against the side of his car, two people from the queue behind had run over to try to help, phoned the police and were just generally making sure everyone was alright.
The one witness (named Gary) moved the CG onto the pavement and put it on the centre-stand, I don't really remember a lot of what was happening at this point I was more concerned with hugging No2 son and reassuring him that I was fine. I called Sickpup just to hear his voice and be reassured myself.
The police attended and took statements from the driver, myself and both witnesses. The witness statements (from what I heard) backed me up 100% which made me feel a little better about it, they agreed that neither of them saw an indicator.
The driver kept his distance by staying a little further down the road from where I was, I don't remember him even asking if we were alright, but on the same token, I don't recall even speaking to him once the witnesses moved the car & bike to the side of the road. I just remember him being on the phone for the majority of the time.
After the breathalyser was done and dusted, I was handed a piece of paper by one of the officers with the Astra drivers details on. (Name and address only, no registration number, no contact number.) And told they would be sorting out the broken glass etc.
The witnesses were amazing, the lovely chaps bundled the CG into the Van and myself and Squirt into the car and took us home. Detouring on the way for me to pick up cigarettes.
After a trip to the A&E (after much nagging from a friend) I can report that I am battered, bruised, and have possible fractures in my left hand - I have to go back down for more X-Rays in 10 days time. No2 son is bruised and sore.
Obligatory paint diagram:

I know it's crap, but I wanted to show that the road was practically straight and visibility was good.
The CG is looking a bit sick to be honest - Although I may be too emotionally attached to see what is up with it, I'll wait for Sickpup to give it the once over on the weekend before posting.
I have been told that a CG cannot die until someone drives a stake through it's Honda-Lump-heart
We shall see. ____________________ Funny, I used to hate being spanked as a child!

Glad you and yours are ok.
In this case going sideways probably saved damage to yourself and the bike.
I know when my ids are pillion it's the most precious cargo I'll every carry. Mind you I do do it on something a bit bigger than a CG ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

Glad you're OK Loz, shame about Squirt's first ride on a bike as well, he seemed a lovely little boy when i heard you telling him off one time ____________________ wizzzard wrote: Imagine God just stopping by, tidying your front room up and then quietly letting himself out again. Damn Hope it all turns out ok for you.
Always good to have the witnesses on your side, always makes the nasty process that bit better.
The Cg will probably only need a quick tinker to be sorted, CG's never die, they just get slightly less reliable ____________________ A quater of a NC30 and a whole tatty ZX6R J2, that's plenty...

Just goes to show how one idiot pulling out slightly can cause all that.
I hope everybody who witnesses that learns to respect bikers abit more as well, by the sounds of it that astra may have pulled out slightly on purpose? I mean why the hell else would he have decided he needed to move.
Hmm. Glad your alright. Sons probably never going to want to ride your bike again though ____________________ Current Bike: Lifan GY125

Hiya Lozzy.
Glad you are both alright.Good thing you got on the brakes before impact.
It sounds like the young lad abandoned the sinking ship(well boat) and let the captain go down with it.
Give him the back of your hand.
Take care.

Get well soon Loz.
Good drills from Squirt, plus he kept his pledge, as he wasn't technically in the accident

Aww shucks thanks all.
It wasn't Squirt's first time on a bike, but it WAS the first time on the back of me. Bless him, as we got home he told me that he had been a little nervous about getting on, but I'm a really good rider.
He also said today he's got no worries about getting back on.
Blindside, It was definitely done on purpose.. He was fed up with waiting in the queue of traffic and tried to turn around

this sounds very similar to what happened to me a little while back!
both police and insurance companies found that the other driver was 100% at fault, but still had to take a month off work and the bike was a write off which was a bit of a pain in the ass tbh!
