I have one more lesson before test ,hopefully i can pick something up from there

Any tips...

I have my own bike but cant practice because im using their bike

You can still practice on your own bike mate, the principles are the same - Steady throttle and use the clutch to control the speed and back brake if needed.
I use my NSR125 to practice u-turns on and that's a totally different style of bike to the one I'm doing my test on, on my NSR I have to lean into the turn and on the DAS bike I just need to turn the handlebars but everything else is exactly the same.
Get yourself out to an industrial estate or another quiet spot where you can get some practice in - the more you do it the easier it gets Very Happy

It's better to practise on your bike then not practise at all.

U turn is easy once you get the hang of it, and transferring the skill from bike to bike isn't so difficult

First off stop stressing - if you stress about it you will ride stiffly and fail it

Secondly it is a low speed maneuvre, so your speed control is off of your clutch. Start the turn slowly and give it a little more speed once you have the exit lined up. Use the back brake to keep the frame tight in the begining of the turn.

To balance - pull forwards a little way to steady the bike rather than diving straight into the turn.

Grip your tank with your knees - push down on the pegs.

Look all the way through the turn - the bike follows where you look

Lead into the turn with your right shoulder.

Practice, practice and then practice some more.

Nope, you're much better putting your foot down than falling off. If you put your foot down there's the slight chance the examiner would let you have another try, if you fall off then I'd expect them to end the test immediately.

What's your bike and what's the training schools bike?

You do know know that you dont have to get a 250cc bike or is that what size bike you want?

A few people have said to use the clutch to control your speed i was taught to "drag" the back break when doing the u-turn, so the throttle and clutch stay in the same place and if you want to slow down you press harder on the back break and speed up up raise your foot slightly off but not completely.

I am not saying everyone else is wrong its just a different way of doing it.

I personally found U- turns much easier when blipping the throttle and slipping the clutch bike felt more stable. Confused

Everyone has their own view of how it can be done, for the test its pretty simple.

Remember nerves if they kick in can cause you to put a foot down, pull the throttle, etc...

So dont:

use idle speed only
left the clutch all the way out
use the front brake

So on the test, the safest possible method to ensure you get around which also allows for nerves kicking in is to:

Move off, give yourself about a good 15 feet to get the speed you want, slip the clutch and use the brake as your speed control.

Let the clutch out a bit more if your not going fast enough but cover the back brake at all times and use it to slow you when needed.

As your going into the turn adjust your body weight and lean in the opposite direction (left) and this will remove the feeling of the bike falling over.

Open your visor as well - keeps you a bit more in touch with the real world in terms of sound and feel.
Slow in, fast(er) out.

I did my DAS on a GS500 but practiced like crazy on the little Yam125 the school let me borrow. It's different but the principle is the same and it's the confidence that you need.

I found that I needed more speed to get round well and that came with confidence, as I kept killing the speed just as I was about to turn and then unsurprisingly couldn't get round Rolling Eyes

Another thing I found that helped me was that I was able to do a u-turn after I'd practiced a bit but the first one was always rubbish - problem with test is I only had one chance! Test format for me was walk bike round, then hop on and ride the u-turn, so I practiced this quite a bit too. Try lots of different streets too as that gives you some more confidence - it's surprising what can put you off (trees, manhole covers etc.)

Hope it goes well! Very Happy

best piece of advice i was given about u turns was this

find a point behind you on the otherside of the road, etc a car number plate and focus on that. slip the clutch and use the rear brake. whatever you do, keep focusing on that point and do not look at the curb, otherwise you will be heading for the curb. look at the car, you head for the car. It should also keep you nicely balanced also.

try that and practise on your bike. you will get it. good luck dude

Lean to the outside a bit, i find if I shift my left arse cheek off a tiny bit then it stops me doing that 'oh god, im leaning in, oh crap oh crap.... foot down!'
Also, if you let off the throttle you'l lose your balance, keep the revs up and balance it with the clutch and back brake, don't dip the revs if you think you can't make it, because you will put your foot down then!
Good luck with your test!

Yes, you will need to take all the bikes docs to prove it is allowed on the road.

Iffy brake light is an MoT fail, as such it shouldn't be on the road at all - and even if you get it through tech inspection if it fails to come on when you are slowing the examiner can fail you for not sharing your intentions with other roadusers.

If your bike is old enough - and I mean 1980's - then you could get away with disconnecting your front brakes sensor and using the rear to signal your intentions.

Nope, you're much better putting your foot down than falling off.

I remember for my test I was of the mentality that "Either this fucker gets around or my arse is on the floor - I'm not putting that foot down" and that very much forced me to just do it. Perhaps what his examiner meant?

Also, best of luck on the test Thumbs Up

Steady revs, slip the clutch and look where you want to go......NOT where you fear ending up!!

and you'll do fine Smile , it's already been said but practice. The turn in the road is generally done on a 'generous' width road anyhow, they're trying to test your ability....not trying to make you fail.

Relax, keep your shoulders loose and it'll all be ok Thumbs Up
