been thinking of getting a afternarket air filter for the cbr (which as you probablty know is PGMFI wotsit ma jiggy). would it do any harm to the bike if i were to fit one without reprogramming the ecu with a power commander etc... i will get one at some point just cant afford one at the mo.

I already have a slip on scorpion can and i know i would probably drop a few more horses than i probably have already with the exhaust, but i dont mind really as it could help with the pending winter commutes by not making it as fierce.

Don't bother, you won't notice any difference.

The RR isn't fierce anyway, just be gentle with the throttle.

was more for the induction noise really, if bikes are like cars in that sense

Hi

With cars they get noisier when fitted with a cone type filter. That means dumping the airbox. You could fit individual filters to the bike, but expect it to run badly even if set up.

All the best

it was just a replacement air filter element that i was thinking of, one that fits into the origional airbox, am just unsure if it would cause any damage to the engine with leaning out the mixture.

The ECU would correct a little bit, but with the exhaust it could well tip it over the end and it'll run lean. Fit a PCIII it's worth the 280 quid.

Replacement filter is not likely to make any difference to induction noise.

Depending on the injection system it might auto correct. But if it doesn't have a lambda prove then it has no way of doing so.

Also a fair chance that it will autocorrect at most throttle openings but switch to a fully mapped fueling on full throttle.

Realistically a performance replacement filter will make negligable difference to the fueling though.

All the best

realistically you will only gain from a pc111 with a dyno run. the maps they have dont realy suit as one bike off the production line will be different to the next.
as keith said with the filter. if you change it i doubt there will be any noticeable difference in power and noise, the original filters these days are very good.

so is it all worth it? i doubt it, best leave as is and wait for a bigger bike to do mods to

Yes, yes, and depends how many mods you have and how far out the stock map is.

everything is standard apart from the slip on exhaust, not sure if i will be doing anything else to it engine wise as i will probably just buy a bigger bike if i want to go faster.

The best thing a PCIII does to a bike is smooth out the whole rev range and give you a bit more torque. Top end power isn't always the be-all-and-end-all of a good bike setup. Stock maps generally tend to be a bit off because general wear and tear on the engine causes your bike to fuel differently. If for example you have a few tight valves and the PCIII map was setup on a bike which had just had all its valves done then your fuelling would be off. You really have to get it tweaked for it to be perfect. Either that or get your bike setup exactly how the PCIII test-bike was setup!

Id expect no more than 5bhp increase at the rear wheel with a custom mapped PC3, race can and a freer flowing air filter element fitted. It might give a bit more than that in the mid range, and the real advantage of a power commander/ other piggyback ECU, is that you can map out any flat spots in most cases, that are engineered in by the factory for either emmissions or noise limits. It's worth doing if you really want the best out of your bike and it running to it's fullest potential. However if it's just more power and torque you want when you crack open the throttle, then saving the cash towards a bigger bike is a much better bet!

I used to have a Kawasaki ZX6R J1, and i considered the race can, dyno jet, K&N filter and ignition advancer tuning route. However Dynojet sent me some dyno charts which showed a stock power curve but with a gain of about 4-4.5bhp from 8000-13000rpm. This isn't what i was after really as id have liked the gains much lower down the rev range than that TBH.

Apparently this loophole has been closed by Dynojet as they were losing so much business in this country by folks buying them cheap in the States. If you've bought one manufactured after March this year, it won't work on a UK bike, you'll have to send it off to Dynojet for it to be tinkered with for the princely sum of £60.

I'm waiting for a second hand one to come up for sale on Ebay/Gixerjunkies personally.

£240 is still £40 less than £280 though... and you know what they say about a penny saved.
