My Honda NSR125RL is overheating. Also in 3rd/4th gear there is a loss of power if the revs dip below 4500rpm. A m8 suggested my mixture was probably lean.

Anyone any ideas on how to change it and set it right?

I am kinda new to 2 strokes and would be greatful for any help.

Cheers. Sick

The trick is not to let the power drop below 4500rpm. The power only comes in with the NSR at about 8000rpm (On the 1993 onwards machines) so keep it around that area if you want power.

As for the overheating, have you checked the water levels? (I know it's obvious but I've got to check.) Also have you checked that the radiator is getting hot at all? If not then maybe the pump has died. Confused

Has the bike had an engine rebuild lately? A week after mines was rebuilt I was hit by severe overheating when something called a spigot (sp?) came loose. Couldn't even plod along at 5mph without it overheating. Not sure how to fix it, I just took it back to the place that done the rebuild for me and got them to fix it for free.

No rebuild. Have checked everything I can think of; radiator, pipes water pump, engine, thermostat etc. all seems to be ok.

Someone else has told me that I have to change the mixture, except this one says its too rich. Really am at a loss because I need my bike for work but can't afford to take it to the garage this month.

With the loss of power i mentioned in 3rd and 4th gear when the revs start to drop I loose all power and have to clutch it to avoid a stall. If I then drop down to second and she's good to go again.

Anyhow thanks for the responses so far.

Is it just the Temperature gauge that shows over heating? My NSR had a thing of doing that. I later found that it only showed that it was over heating when I had the lights on. When I looked at the wiring, some of the wires were touching that shouldn't of been. When separated, the problem was solved. No more overheating worries. So I'd just check that as well. Wink

No she cut out on me quite badly and without warning twice on the way to work at 5am one time. Just had to dump her call a taxi and call the rac on the way back from work.

wot a nitemare,
ok you will have to make sure that your oil mixture is spot on, otherwise you'll get major problems.
on my NSR it smokes when first started and after a RUN it stops and i no this is 100% correct, but mine is newer and deristriced.
when the engine dies, does it seize, back wheel lock up or just loose power? the little bit of power obtained on these bikes are at 8000rpm its hard to cruise under 6000rpm and expect to pull away. i suggest you change your plug on it aswell, i blew mine within a week, follow these simple guild line and see who you get on, if you still have no joy ask Kick Start. he's full off knowledge

Very Happy

When it cut out I pulled the clutch in so fast, but the back kicked out a little so i dont know if it was about to lock up or not.

My NSR is derisricted aswell as i was running along at 170 kph in 5th with maybe a little left in her. Didn't dare push it any further was running out of straight open road rapidly.

Going to change the plug friday. If all is well at work.

Thanks Dave. Very Happy

When mine kept overheating I found out it was the head gasket.
Its not a difficult job if you take your time.

hm, the problem you have with the revs seems to be pretty similar to a problem i had with mine, clicking into 3rd gear after about 7000rpm in second and the revs just wouldn't push up any further, then it seemed to slow down and there was nothing i could do about it, try checking the air intake into your fuel tank, the tank needs to breath to ensure your carb sucks the righ amount of fuel and air into the pistons. if you keep getting the problem just try opening your fuel cap to let a bit of air in, set off and see how it fairs then. as for your overheating i would recomend taking it to a garage no matter what, unless you know exactly what your doing.
