i just picked up my first bike to learn on, a honda superdream and when i picked it up it started up first time (probs cos he warmed it up beforehand) and rode fine. half way home though and it wouldnt rev past 8k, and seems to sometimes bog down even lower, around 5 -6k. now later on, it wont start off the electric start, i can just hear the solenoid clicking. iv checked the usual plugs, filters and hav cleaned the carb out but nowt is working. whats the next step?

Battery?
Needs charging or replacing perhaps.

i would imagine he jump started before you arrived as the bike was warm.
sounds like battery, if not then loose connection/s, earth or a worn starter motor.

as for the running issues i would be looking at them awful carbs they had, perhaps the diaphragms have gone in the tops.

It's ok to do that, but general consensus is don't have the car engine running. I'm assuming it is 12v like you say, and not 6v.

as for the starter problem, take the terminal connections off of your battery and clean them up with sandpaper until they're shiny, then fit them back nice and tight! Find the starter relay and make sure everything is clean and tight on that, make sure there are no broken wires. If it still doesn't work after that then try this:

Short out the starter relay by contacting the two terminals together with a screwdriver/spanner etc. It will spark so be prepared. Put the screwdriver/spanner on across SOLIDLY, to make sure you get adequate connection. If the starter motor turns it's either the relay, connections or the starter button. It can also be other things.... If the starter doesn't turn, check all connections between the relay and the battery and the relay and the starter.

Good luck!
