How do i shrink bmp files?

How do i reduce the filesize of a bmp file? I can easily reduce jpegs, but I cant find anything that will do the same for bmp's.
Suggestions pls?

You can use something like Photoshop or The GIMP to reduce the bit depth of those files, say to 8 bit (256 colours) which will help with the file sizes, but they won't look as good due to using less colours. Or, if you want lossless compression of a bitmap file, convert it to a PNG file, which is smaller but retains all the data.

Or just compress the file to a zip/rar/whatever?

A crude method I use (and you can too if your on windows) is Powertoys for Windows XP, there an image resizer which is operated on the right click.

Irfanview would probably do it, or use it to convert it to JPG.

Very easy way I find is to convert it to JPG. Simply right click to edit in paint, then save as and change the file type to '.jpg' in the drop down bar!

Interesting ideas theree guys, but none have worked. The pix resizer and powertoys actually increased the file size.....
I can't change it to a jpeg because it has to remain a bmp.
Its a signature file for mozilla thunderbird email. It only allows bmps..
