I've recently bought a 1998 CG125 and I have yet to ride it properly since it starting it is such a ballache. Sometimes it will start on the first kick, then I'll let it run for a couple of minutes, ride up the street and then it will stop. After it stops, restarting it is nigh on impossible for me. The choke is always out when I try and start it, and the throttle is always on a little bit too, but it never seems to start on tap.

Any advice?

Shouldn't need to have the throttle open to start it, especially when it's warm. Could be that you're flooding it when the motor's warm, so it doesn't want to start.

Try it with just the choke, or even half choke.

Down the road it probably wont need the choke.

Try kicking it over without and see if that helps.

If your mechanically competent, get a haynes manual and adjust the valve clearances.

If they are too far out, it will be a bugger to start, most CGs start first kick with the valves set right.

stinkwheel Well I just had my hands up a pigs fanny. Which makes your concerns pale into insignificance.

You do not need a Haynes to adjust the valve clearance.
The Honda CG125 website tells you how to do it.

You should only need the choke for about ten seconds or maybe twenty if its really cold. Probably need to keep revving it when the choke is on or it'll die. My cg wont idle on choke. When it dies try starting without choke with some throttle. If your riding it with choke on you'll have to rev between gear changes to keep it going.

With my '99 cg, I need full choke once in a blue moon, if that.

Try half when you'd automatically go to full (It's got a mid position, if you've not noticed- quite easy to just go straight up with it. Down = off, mid =half, up = full).

There was a thread a while back, try the search, had a good diagram about it. CG125 choke is an actual choke, rather than something to increase the idle speed which is why you'd treat it a bit differently to what you may be used to .

my cg (1991 brazilian)doesnt like starting on choke unless its freezing cold, it usually starts with out choke first kick but i do need to keep a few revs on untill it warms up slightly(only a couple of minutes) then its fine all day long.

It only ever starts on half choke or no choke...even in immense cold. Is this normal?
