Hi,

I need a mechanically minded person for this one, I'm going to pick my new zx-6 engine up today, is there anything i should look out for?? also the engine has a worn down generator cover...is it possible to see if the crank has been damaged etc?.

The engine was in a bike that was in a big crash...its evan got a cracked rocker cover (what ever that is) is that likely to have damaged anything.?

Regards

Oh dear,
A rocker cover is on an engine that has rocker arms and push rods. Evidently the breaker you bought this engine from does not know that it is an overhead cam design (as with all modern engines). This means that it is likely that the very top cover of the engine is damaged...

I would be very wary if I were you, there will be loads of bike write-offs with no damage to the engine, and so be very careful of this.

If the generator cover is worn then I would imagine that the generator would get damaged before the crank, but don't quote me on this.

HTH Thumbs Up

Well I'd be very wary. If the engine has run for more than a couple of seconds on its side or upside down, it can cause big damage to your engine, in particular the bottom end, due to oil starvation.

I know this was a big problem on GPX600s, a story in UBG a while back about a guy who had to replace most of the bottom end bearings after dropping it with the engine running.

A cracked rocker cover in itself isn't a huge problem, although it may seep a little oil.

Oh and I'm pretty sure you can have rocker arms and OHC - my CB250RSA had a SOHC with rocker arms to the 4 valves.

Hi

A minor crack in the rocker cover (or cam cover for the pedants) is not that likely to do any damage on its own. On some bike the oil feed to the cams goes through the rocker cover but it is not that common. Just replace the rocker cover with the one from your old engine.

The crank end cover might cause more of a problem. If it has gone the whole way through then it is possible for it to damage the stator or rotor. It would probably take a fairly large impact to push it far enough out of line for the stator to be pushed out of position and damage the rotor / crank. Again, 90% likely you can just swap the cover over with the existing ones.

Yes running an engine on its side can do a load of damage. However a short time at idle speed is not likely to do any real damage.

All the best

Keith

ok i got the lump Razz

the crack on the rocker cover was very very small..it was a semi circle about the size of a 1 pence piece.

1 more tho...the engine is from a 1998 zx6 (G1), and my bike is the zx6 (g2) 1999 bike..i been told by various people this shouldn't matter as the lump is the same..but should i expect any differences??

what exactly is the difference between the G1 and the G2 other than color?

regards.

Also every body in this thread gets a Thumbs Up from me Razz

Considering that they are both from the same model as in G then I doubt it will be a problem, all of the L model ZXR's frames and engines are the same but not the same as either of the H models so I'd say you'll be ok.
