https://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/19/nasa_giss_cockup_catalog/

precis NASA's climate change figures are fudged, ie we can mess them up but as long as it shows the planet is warming up our mistakes are ok....

NASA's original plot said 0.2C hotter , but when checked revealed it to actually be 0.25C colder.....

Hi

Few more details here:-

Telegraph Article

Bit more damning about the figures, which are the main ones used to support the IPCC.

So here we have a massively expensive report, being used to support hideously expensive industrial changes, and they cannot even be bothered employing someone to check the basic figures.

All the best

So how long until what was formerly Global Warming and is now Climate Change becomes Global Cooling?

Well, they need some sort of snazzy name to impose a carbon tax on us, don't they? Never mind the billions upon billions involved in oil and dirty industry people - the way to 'save the planet' is to allow your government to tax you every time you exhale.

It was in the 1970s (although for different claimed reasons), with scare stories of the next ice age.

Problem is that theoretically CO2 will increase global temperature. Cannot really argue with that and it can easily be proven. However it is one of many factors, and affects other factors (hence why the claims for warming of the globe are about triple that to be expected from the CO2 rises alone). For example, an increased temperature means more water evaporation and hence more water vapour in the atmosphere (and water vapour is a far more effective greenhouse gas), hence even higher temperature rises. Until you factor in the effects of the extra water vapour in forming clouds which reflect the heat before it reaches the earth. And then you need to factor in the differing effects of clouds at different heights.

An interesting post Thumbs Up It's mildly entertaining watching some people really believe that being taxed will save the planet.

I tend to take the view that tax is required, and as long as it is collected fairly I have no great issues about that. Reducing the amount of government wastage to reduce the tax take is a seperate issue.

As such I have no theoretical objection to carbon taxes replacing other taxes. I have no great objection to the basic idea of being taxed on CO2 emitted rather than on income. I have serious objections to how much is due being biased by various special interest groups.

By the way, for an example of how the current fiddles are being done

Such idealism , you really think they'll remove one tax and put inplace another that is better or fairer?.

What will normally happen is that you will be taxed normally and a tax will be put ONTOP of the taxes that you are already paying for...

In the best case scenario they repeal the old tax and replace it with an unfairer more punative tax, say poll tax for council tax....

Ie Labour a few months ago decided to ignore the treaty which exists which states that you cannot tax flights coming into your country or connecting flights away from your country...

ie you can tax a flight from London to Schipol but cannot tax the schipol flight to whereever, Labour wanted to break that treaty and get its hands on ALL the tax for all the journey......

Unintended consequence? , anywhere but london there are barely any flights that go direct anywhere, they all go to Paris schiopol or Berlin and connect via those cities.

Remember keith many of the Labour party were ex communists they want 125% of your income like feudal Japan and to give you back a living allowance , tax credits are exactly this , ie get mugged only to give it back to you.....

Reread what I typed. How we are taxed is a very different question to how much we are taxed.

Sure ok my response to that is that they will choose the most inefficient most regressive (taxing the poorer harder) , and most obfusicated taxes possible.

They already have that with income tax. A carbon tax is probably no more complicated.

We do need a far simpler tax system, and I have no theoretical objection to that being based on CO2 (basically a consumption tax) rather than income. Simplicity would save a massive amount of money through reduced pointless bureaucracy (might also pretty much destroy the industry you work in, although I suspect you wouldn't be too upset).

Having both is just a useless mess.

Sure the thing is the HMRC definition of simplification is wrong and their dictionaries are well wrong too, each time it is simplified the guidance book gets bigger, 1999 the guidance book was about 1cm thick it is now in 3 volumes and are telephone book thickness...

And no I wouldn't care too much as I;m wanting out soon as I get me qualification , another 5 months (I scrounged and 2 months from somewhere).

Quite, which is a very seperate point.

Could even get lucky and have them start with a clean sheet of paper to replace income tax and NI with a carbon tax (and I mean a single sheet of A4 paper).

All the best

the taxes are going to be big on all industry's and activity's..america will led the way and i suppose the EU will follow.agriculture will be hit hard if the proposals of $175 carbon tax per dairy cow, $87.50 per head for beef cattle and a little more than $20 per pig are bought in,as for road users pay as you drive will be in by then clocking up the miles, carbon credit cards for those using public transport and all carbon taxes added on top of the tax already placed on products..worked out by there carbon foot print..there will be no replacing of taxes..just a case of adding them to the current price of everything.

That is an implementation issue. There is no reason at all for public transport users to have any added tax benefits for doing so at all. Merely tax them on their carbon consumption (probably by the average of carbon per passenger mile, which would be close to the same level as that paid by a car user for the same journey).

Rationing and taxing are very different.

That they managed a mere 104 signatures show how few people give a damn.

As said I have no theoretical objection to carbon tax rather than income tax. How it is implemented (fairly) is another very separate issue.

All the best

sadly i sense it may be a case of both..adding taxation to curb the use of something is useless if you free other funds for the people concerned.. you believe in man made global warming?

You might well be right, but that is an implementation issue.

mad_man wrote:

Not really. If you have (say) £100 income and pay £40 income tax, then spend 1/3 of the remainder on goods that generated 4 tons of CO2 and would be carbon taxed. If you increased that to 8 tons you would be taxed no more at all.

If you were paid the same £100 but with no income tax, but instead paid £10 a ton for the CO2 you generated then you have paid exactly the same tax. Double that to 8 tons and you have paid a hell of a lot more tax. Cut down and you pay rather less.

This basic idea is fine. Problem comes with political fiddling. For example, why should there be any different rates for any source of CO2, whether that is home heating or flying to Barbados.

mad_man wrote:
you believe in man made global warming?

Err, not a simple answer. In the current hysteria about it no. That there may be some element of it I cannot see any grounds to argue against. Basic and very simple theory says that it happens. How much it happens (and whether it generates feedbacks which cancel it out) is another question.

As such my best reply would be I see no evidence of any appreciable warming caused by human CO2 emissions. I certainly do not see any reason for the current financially hideous attempts to do things about it.

All the best

Keith

Hi

So do I, but I hold out little hope. The evidence that it is largely made up has been readily available for a decade and in that time far more people have been led to think that man made global warming is an urgent and proven problem.

Trouble is that it is an easy source of tax. If you can make people feel guilty about doing something then they will struggle to object to being taxed on it. Hence it is an easy thing to use to replace income tax with little chance of people complaining of being taxed highly.

Reality is that the primary effect will be that any high carbon producing industry will just move to other countries which tax them less.

One reason the UK is keen on it (with it being based against 1990 figures) is that having destroyed the coal industry (and coal power generation creates a fair amount of CO2) since then we have a massive head start to make ourselves look better against other countries.

All the best

It appears as if we are having a convergence of bad things , if China's annual growth falls below 5% per year the entire world economy is toast, as China owns so much debt that it would start spending and releasing this debt , causing a huge catastrophe economically...

a drop from 10% down to 7% means 100,000 out of work and riots and mass violence are already occuring there.
