Seems to be more the case nowadays.

I didnt get good grades and im in a warehouse (groan), however theres people there whom could be lawyers, geologists and all sorts that have gone through uni only to end up in our warehouse because they couldent get a job in their field.

Its a shame really, seeing all those years education being thrown down the drain.

as you get older you will find something you like doing.
get a job where you are learning a trade. a plumbers dogs body, a carpenters sweeper upper etc etc.
then you can go it alone at a later date.
when i left school fookin years ago i had a couple of apprentiship jobs and was earning a measly £16 a week, me mates were on over £30 a week in warehouses etc. (doesnt sound much but fuel was just 38p a gallon, fags less than 30p for 20 etc)
i now do nothing that i learned back then but still use what i learned to this day.
i enjoy my current job and its the only job i have enjoyed (carpenter) if only it wasnt for the fookin credit crunch panic i would be doing better now.
as for school. if you didnt go then you wouldnt be reading this and typing on here
Thumbs Up

Yup the problem isn't with qualifications and the learning process its more to do with the fact that qualifications are being devalued....

But there are more things to consider:

:arrow:NOW mentality, in that people graduate and believe the hype, it often takes lots of time to get anywhere near a decent wage, I earn average (median) UK income after 3 years commitment to accountancy , (average wage in the UK is about 24K but the median falls around 16.7K). My bosses may well earn 250K pa, but it took them 25 years of brown nosing to get there, and their lives were put on hold for years.

:arrow:UK businesses do not value many qualifications, engineers are particularly de-valued in the UK, Estate agents are valued higher than engineers, in Germany engineers who had experience were near the top of the tree.

:arrow:Qualifications are 15% , experience 85% with varying degrees of luck and being at the right place at the right time.

:arrow:Companies can only pay the wages of which their business will support , thus it is why London wages are almost always higher due to a greater density of people and internationalised business.. probably why city state wages are higher as most of their trade is overseas related.

I just want to make something clear here. There is only one person to blame for you working in a warehouse, and that is YOU.

In some ways, I do agree with Hetzer about its "who you know", and I do agree that school isn't always the best place to go (I didn't enjoy much of my school life).

However, the reason you still work in a warehouse is because you haven't gone out there and done something about it. When I left university (with no degree I might add) I worked in Sainsburys for three years. I realised that I didn't want to work there for the rest of my life, and by the time the third year came around I decided that I was going to find a good job. So I applied for everything that came up and eventually I got a job in my previous company. I worked there for four years, I've just finished a year at my current company and I'm on £30k. Not bad for a 28 year old? I only have A levels and no degree, I had to explain to people why I didn't get a degree (which is harder than it sounds) but I went to the effort of looking for a better job.

That isn't the only way to go about it of course. Look at Hetzer, he runs his own business. It might not be a huge empire like Virgin or something, but he's his own boss and he can choose what hours he wants to work. What he did was go out there and do something.

However cynical someone like Hetzer gets about the nature of society etc he can't deny that he is able to make a living under his own terms by going out there and doing something.

So, why the heck aren't you out there doing something? You can make a business out of anything, all you need is an idea. And don't listen to all of this "Financial downturn" bollocks, because (To paraphrase Robocop) Good business is where you find it!

So, you should either be on job websites for a couple of hours a day looking for that perfect niche, or you should be thinking of something you can do to earn yourself money that doesn't involve being employed by someone else.

PostPosted: 13:33 - 22 Nov 2008    Post subject: Re: Wild buggering goose chase. Reply with quote

MarJay, Vee

I think the problem with this line of reasoning, is you've just swung to the other extreme (in spite of your opening rejoinder the content of your post lacked much qualification).

Finding a good job is 20% qualification, 30% experience (and within this percentage you can factor in the personality traits you refer to such as tenaciousness, hard work etc) - and 50% good luck, etc.

Thinking that a qualification will open any door you want is desperately unrealistic in today’s age. It isn't that difficult to get a degree (yes I have one, and it's worth shit, as well as al/ the a's at a-level and gcse I earned) - and to be blunt, most fields are overcrowded. The only way that a degree will guarantee a job is if you study something so esoteric that you are oneof only a handful of people who could perform that job. I'm talking like rocket science, video game design, etc.

So, as Marjay implies, Vee, you do need to have a certain something about you. You can't just wave your qualifications about and expect to be offered a desirable well paid job (not when there's a hundred other people behind waiting in line to do the same). You might have been able to do so in the 1950's. But now when you have people going to university, drinking to excess, and then cramming the day before their finals - and getting firsts - the whole process of higher education is deeply devalued.

But Marjay swings to some very lazy capitalist dogma. Pull you socks up really high, start your own business. True, it might work. Chances are, though, it won't. Many people try to better themselves their whole lives long and still end up scraping off the same turd from their boots thirty, forty years hence. Trying can be the first step to success but in most instances it's the first step to failure.

Luck is a factor. But so are variables such as the class structure.

I feel for you Vee. I think you should take on board some of MarJays advice. Don't settle where you are, keep looking for something you'll prefer, and keep hopeful.

But don't be taking his advice too literally, as when you meet with continual steel doors and glass ceilings, it will gradually get watered down into you thinking that twenty years on minimum wage is good because you'll be given extra responsibilities like locking up the warehouse!

Truth is, 99% of jobs are shit. 99% of people hate their jobs. The whole point of jobs is to keep the writhing masses exhausted and stupid, chained to an endless treadmill that ensures an innoculous entry and exit from life. But you haven't really got a choice but to aim for that 1%. Better to be a glorious failure - on the off chance that you’ll succeed - than just another warehouser hating every day.

Your choice is simple:
Keep looking for something that is truly better (not the crumbs that Marjays way of thinking will have you eventually looking for)
Or commit mind suicide, which is what most people do.

I spent weeks on end whilst at University, learning how to approach interviews & how to answer questions, body language, presentation etc. Both to single interviewers, a panel interview and testing days. Practiced, practiced and practiced some more.

I'd say I have about a 90% success record in interviews these days. I certainly wouldn't be anywhere without having done all that fecking work as my engineering degree wasn't incredibly strong.

Having said that, you might all be judging vee a little too soon before he has spoken. For all we know, he has a degree in the fine arts or music technology.

Which is, as we all know, no good to fucking anyone. Laughing

Frustrating but you need to look at that from the Dads point of view too.

I'm sure even Hetzer would agree that if he owned a small business, a job came up that his daughter was capable of doing and she needed the work, she would get the job over someone who was more qualified or even more able to do it.

It was understood that there would always be a job for me at my Dads business if I needed one. Even if there wasn't one, they would find something for me to do. He's sold up his share but I do know they still employ one of the other directors sons who is a useless streak of piss if ever I saw one. None the less, they find something for him to occupy his time with.

Before anyone says that is unfair, remember, the business belongs to THEM. They started it with money out of their own pocket (which they could barely afford at the time) and their decisions and management built it up. As such, they should be able to decide who works there, in exactly the same was as I get to decide who is allowed a go on my motorbike. Valentino Rossi could come along and ask for a go, but my mate Al would be handed the keys before he would.

I agree with that........ though sometimes it makes very bad economic sense as I was replaced by the son of a boss who was lets say was a bit thick and ran the company into the ground though as the Chinese say wealth only lasts 3 generations , as the son never risked his own money or went through the hard times to build the biz

But how do councils justify it? , they always spend ££££££££ on going through the motions interviews , tests lots and lots of tests , and 2nd interviews and such malarky and it always goes to the son/daughter of somebody already working for the council.....

Its not their smegging money its (part) mine via council tax... Rolling Eyes

Don't worry about being in a warehouse, I work in one (albeit surrounded by water) and earn over double the UK average wage.

Gain what you can from where ever you work, you never know when it will be useful.

(my experience in retail stockcontrol helped get me a chance offshore even though I had stopped doing it 10 years previously, my sap knowledge from an advertising company did the rest.)

The rant is that i'm in a warehouse because i've been looking for buggering jobs since i left!(been there since 16 part time through college)
Have applied for hundreds of jobs and search daily, apply daily.

I have 7 a-c gcse's, A level in photography, BTEC ND in Graphic design and HND in Interactive media design and can use a multitude of software from av editing to 3d/2d animation and web design.

I'm not saying i want to walk into a massive wage packet because i have a piece of paper, just something reasonable that i enjoy at least a little bit, surely thats enough to expect for going down that route.

<edit> Marjay, i didn't say im settling atall, been trying to do something about it, i have a website and get small freelance jobs here and there.</>

"Graphic Design".

Aaah.

Don't mean to talk down your studies but fuck me, no wonder, everyone seems to do a degree relating to some form of photoshoping/3d video editing these days.

Have you looked into relocating elsewhere, even if it's 400 miles away? Means to an end etc...

Ah, studying "media".

One or two people on the forum work in that sector, and have been rather successful (Rob is on IMDB, and he's cool). However, a hell of a lot of you have entirely failed to get jobs. It's a small sector, tightly knit, and to work there you need to be homosexual, wear silly clothes, and have stupid hair.

Robby's standard job advice. I'm assuming from your tone that you're quite young, which is good. Go for any job with any big company - admin role is ideal to aim for, if the job market is really that tight you might end up in postroom. Without quals or experience you shouldn't expect to do any better. Pay will be pretty shitty, going by my employer (civil service) from about 14k (national) to 20k (London, with a decent department).

If you're any good, you will rise through the ranks. If you're not, well, maybe you should go back to warehouse work.

You'll probably do the standard complaining about how hard it is to find these jobs, etc. Looks everywhere, and don't expect massive success from Reed or Monster. I found my original job on the job centre plus website, about 5 years ago. It was advertised at £3k less than the actual pay turned out to be, and made the job sound shit. Quite glad I went for it now.
