I defied any common sense this morning and tried to get to work on my bike.

I got as far as Willerby Road (about 300 yards from my house) and promptly fell off. A quick inspection showed no real damage to the bike, other than a snapped indicator, easily fixed with a bit of araldite.

So I wheeled it home and went in for a cuppa whilst deciding how to get to work. I went into the garage after to give the bike a good look over. Big scrape to the engine casing, rounded off the bar ends and took a bit off the end of my brake leaver, exhaust looked okay but one of the rubber rings on the things that holds it has been worn away while it was sliding. All in all, not as bad as it could have been.

Hang on.. what's that dark puddle? SH*T. It's oil. A closer inspection showed that I have a fracture in the engine casing, here:

There doesn't seem to be any material missing, just a crack, but it's bleeding oil when the engine is running.

I need the bike for work, so i'll have to try and get it into a garage tomorrow. Any idea of what it will cost, or what's involved? I'm hoping that it will be a simple weld job.

Me thinks the simplest way to fix it is not to weld it , but probably to replace the clutch cover , a new one for a CBR600F costs about £35 , with £5 for a gasket, cheaper on ebay...


Either drain the oil then replace it, or tip the bike on its side , and quickly replace it,

Unless its actually not on the clutch cover and is on the engine case itself that is then weld £50-60...

according to where you've circled forget any idea of a clutch cover and hopefully it's just your pickup cover is cracked, but your circle is in the wrong place ...

you really need to photo a little closer and show us where the leak is coming from with an arrow (hold a pencil to the leak when photo taken, use good light)..

if it is the lower crankcase cracked (i hope it ain't) i'd be looking at using some liquid metal or similar to seal the crack depending on how bad the damage is ...

you really need to get out there and clean the area off nicely then start the bike to determine exactly where it is leaking, those timing covers crack really easily thru the bolt holes and piss oil out, so it could be a nice simple fix of a new cover and gasket ...

if that is the problem you'll get raped by a shop for a new cover, better off to give a call on OldSkoolSuzuki for a secondhand one (probably a fiver and post)...

FWIW its most likely the timing cover, there is more chance of it hitting the ground than the clutch cover. They are very durable but mine would leak at any chance it go, are there any marks on the outer surface?. I found the best way to sort it was to make my own gaskets from gasket paper. Maybe the paper is thicker but it seems to work better than the OEM ones.

According to my manual, it's the pulse generator coil cover. I've check it and there is a crack running about 1 inch from the bottom, running down to the underside. It has not done any damage to anything on the other side of the gasket, thank god.

I'm going to clean it up tommorow and whack a load of araldite over the crack. Then i'll order a new cover. No point getting it welded as the cover is scratched to bits anyway.

That sound like an okay plan?

i tried araldite inside an alternator cover once, it didn't stick too well ...

pretty certain i'd prefer to try chem' metal, make sure the area you stick it to is scrupulously clean (not just wiped with a clean rag)

Yeah, it was snowing and icy, plus it was early in the morning so the roads hadn't had chance to clear.

I'm going to give it a go with the araldite in a bit, it that doesn't work I will try some sort of chemical metal.

I've smothered it in araldite this morning, and hopefully that will stop it from leaking until another cover can be sourced.

Also, I scraped my exhaust. That really annoyed me, though to be honest it's not as bad as it could have been:

I seem to have a thing about falling off my bikes to the right, so that I bash my exhaust. It's like toast that always falls butter side down

Anyone know where I can get some of that black rubber trim?

Welding would have been a permanent fix, not the prettiest unless the time was spent to clean it all down but it's still doable. By the looks of it you like a tidy bike so maybe it's not for you then.
