I just wondered how you ride. Obviously at speed you'd need your visor down but when do you ride with it up? If I'm on familiar roads and the weather is decent (i.e. no rain, little wind) and not going to quickly then I ride with it up, otherwise it's shut.

I guess I should ride with it down all the time incase of debris etc but I like the feel of wind on my face on a morning!

Generally down with it opened up one notch (to stop it steaming up - must get a breath deflector or something) until I get her up to about 45, then I can shut the visor and the vents take care of keeping it clear.

If its really cold in the mornings on my way home I tend to leave it up (otherwise its steams up, and its like being in fog). The ride home is only a short run down a 30 limit road anyhow. However, I don't like to run with the visor up if I can help it.

Rain is a pain though. Like riding in the rain (odd that one Embarassed ), but would kill to have a visor clean system (like the cameras onboard F1 cars), or at least some wind screen wipers... hmmm, where's my 'Inventors Toolkit' TM?!?

I sometimes ride with it up, if i'm going slowly.. Through town or something. But after the last few rides I've been on where I've had it up in the countryside and had flies hit my face twice I think i'll keep it down from now on!!

Worst one was a couple of years ago though when a wasp stung me on the neck! Only available piece of skin and I was doing about a ton.. He must have seen me coming and lined up! Evil or Very Mad

Laughing What are the chances of that!!!! Always makes me crap myself when something big like a bumble bee hits my visor at speed.

I have usually had my visor down all the time lately in the good weather. In the winter I left it open a crack to stop it steaming up. I usually put it up at traffic lights etc for a bit of a breather.

The mate that I bought my old MT50 off used to ride around with his helmet visor up, until one day a huge bumble bee came straight into his helmet. He rode with it down from then onwards! Laughing

I tend to just open it one notch while I'm stationary or riding slowly to stop it misting up and down all other times.

Worth keeping it down, especially on country lanes as if you're following someone and they flick a stone up, into your face, not nice... Rolling Eyes

Arg, danmit I just remembered I'm gonna need a new helmet as well when I sort out the bike or buy a new one Confused

Down always. I never ride with my visor up and I lock it shut.

Sometimes if the weather is really bad I use the visor demist thingy that Arais have. It sort of breaks the seal at the bottom of the visor where it joins the helmet. I usually use anti-fogging stuff in the winter anyway and the helmet is good at demisting.

The only time I ever really open the visor is when I'm stationary or I've got an itch or runny noise, but that's only whilst I'm sorting myself out.

I'm a bit of a stickler for keeping the visor shut after a big crash I had a few years ago. The front of the helmet took a big hit and the visor took a fair old whack, it had white paint engrained into the plastic from the force of the impact. I know a good deal of it was luck, but I'm fairly sure that if it weren't for the visor being locked shut at the time I would have had serious facial damage.

Now it's shut and stays that way if I can help it.

I change mine depending on where I am, its up as I leave my drive until I pull away from the end of my road and it goes down, with it just one click open till I leave the village and I close it completely. It gets opened again as I stop at lights, and as I pull in to the car park at work.
Sounds like a lot of effort, don’t know why I don’t just leave it closed!

when going around town and again generally under 40mph i leave it open. When gently cruising around 50mph - 60mph i usually leave it open one click, and when accelerating hard and doing 70mph ish i have it completely closed.

I think one of the great things about bikes is that it's just you, the bike, the road, and the elements. So having the visor closed gives you a sense of being shut off from this a little (if you know what i mean), so having it open definitely is preferable! that's what i think, i like to see things with my naked eye.. rather than through a piece of glass or plastic Cool

Fabreeze in helmet will sort it out.

Came in this morning with visor open for most of the 30miles in the pouring rain - Now the whites of my eyes are a pretty shade of pink ! Embarassed Need to try and get out of that habit but I feel safer with visor up in dodgy weather.

Having it shut means I aint going to go deaf and I cant get hit by anything in the face.

With your visor up you truly can be one with nature... you and a fly can connect like never before Wink

I've always found Fabreeze made everything smell nice for 5 minutes, then it goes back to normal for the rest of the day... But then, for the next week everything smells twice as bad as it did before you used the Fabreeze Exclamation All that rubbish about breaking down odors... If that were the case, why would they bother adding perfume to it, after all it would just break down the smell of the perfume Question One reason, just like any other room/furniture spray - it masks the smells - badly Evil or Very Mad

On the bright side... you can always go out and ride Very Happy

I used to ride with my visor up most of the time untill a bee landed in between the padding and my face(wasn't going fast so it was still alive). also got stung on the leg once riding through town in jeans. always wear proper protective gear now just in case. Laughing

After having tinnitus in my ears after coming back from reading I always wear ear plugs for long distances I never want to experience pain like that in my ears again.

I have small ears and have trouble getting them to stay in place. I landed up buying some custom moulded ones. They work well.

The wind noise from a helmet is VERY loud and quite capable of sending you deaf even with the visor closed. PB did a test years ago with the microphone for a noise meter in a riders ear, loads of different helmets and a CBR600 round a test track at 100mph. The quietest helmet was 105db, the noisiest was 120db. As the db scale is logarithmic, that 105db is is around 250 times as loud as a standard 82db bike exhaust (old standard).

All the best

Keith

I've got custom molded plugs too and my Arai sort of has little ear recesses. So after a couple of seconds of positioning of the ears they are quite comfy, don't really notice that they are there.
