Hi,

Looking for a 12 month placement for my course (process engineer jobs mainly) and Im getting lots of interviews and had two that have gone well.

The problem is, i had one yesterday and went brillient, we had to a presentation which i did my research for and after speaking to the other candidates (most not going for the same job) my idea was much better.

BUT, the outcome is 2-3 weeks. In the next 3 weeks I have 3 more interviews and also find out the outcome of another interview monday/tuesday.

So i have two questions as i dont have much experience in this bit of interview process.

1) the next job interview is a two day assessment tues-wed, the outcome of the first interview is late as tuesday so would be on the assessment when i find out.

I know you can call and say you have a job offer and so need to know, but is it 'normall practice' to ask because you have another interview and would be real annoying if you found out while there?

2) I really want the job i went for interview yesterday dispite it being the lowest paid (£3k less than the highest) but they have another assessment centre next week and the week after that.

Is it rude if i get an offer to drag it out a little longer so this one i want can make a decision?

Thanks in advance and sorry if that sound complicated, i hate job hunting!

No it's not rude. They won't mind you dragging them out for an answer. Well, they might mind but they'll accept it as normal.

As my dad said to me, tell them 'I'd rather make the right decision in a day or two, then the wrong decision now'.

That kind of old toffee.

I want to know what the hell you're doing to be getting loads of offers though Sad

No, not at all, that was my 6th interview (though i have got though the first stage twice now) and yet to get an offer. I reckon i could out of the one yesterday but will know AFTER i have had all my interviews currently lined up.

I just dont want to end up with one that i dont like because i did this bit wrong, plus quite a few companies have pulled out but were much better off in engineering than my friends in finance and maths

But, thats what I meant. Since leaving uni I've had one interview, and one 'proper' job. Had a couple of shitty agency things I just meandered into for a day or so but thats it.

And believe me... I've applied.

So having the problem of lots of interviews isn't a bad problem to have right now.

Yea your right, the problem i have is that you have to take a whole day off uni for the 'chance' to work for them for 12 month for the 'chance' to get a grad job when you leave.

About 40 people on my course are going for placements and a lot are really good friends so your competing against your mates.

I also seem to fall into a catagory of getting lots of interviews but not getting the job, even though i have high grades and do a lot in my space time (e.g. chairman of the uni bike club).

I would say that this semester has been the worst out of all of them cos of interviews. You have the day and then they show you around almost in a 'this is what you could have won' mannor IMO.

And as you mention in your thread bonny, its a crazy system, so much of everything that every person have on their CV/say in intreview is complete lies.

The need for young blood in engineering is still relatively quite high, chemical and mechanical, hence the interviews and his general success. That and the fact his is a placement, not permenant employment of a professional which means he will be cheap labour for them. (no offence)

What did you study Bonny?

Only thing I can say is tell them your position on the matter. Don't just ignore them until you hear back from the job you really want. I've had offers 'expire' through making them wait 'too long'.

Surely if you get an offer for a job that you'd be happy doing but there is a better interview tomorrow you should say yes I'll take it, and then you find you get the better job change your mind with the first job? I know its unfair to mess them around but you'd cover your own ass that way.

The problem comes becuase your competing with your friends and people on your year, so if you take two places you effectively taking one away from someone.

I guess ill have to see, hopefully get something soon!
