pillion questions...

This seems to be a topic never covered. However, it could well be the difference btwn passing and failing.

What exactly are the pillion questions at the end of the test and how difficult are these to answer?

I would have thought that carrying a passenger would affect: suspension, balance at low speeds, braking distances, weave and wobble, the angle of the lights beam, the capacity to lean into bends, tyre pressure requirements, mpg, etc.

The advice to a passanger would be: shut up, sit still, lean with me, don't interfere with the controls, sit nice and tight with your hands round my waist and your chest pressed pleasingly against my back if you're a pretty female but get your fucking hands on the luggage rack if you're a bloke, don't indicate for me, don't offer advice on when the road is clear, etc, etc.

Am I missing something here? I'm not going to be asked realy awkward questions like, if your passanger weighs 130 kg, what pressure should your tyres be at? etc etc.

thats it. All they will ask is how a pillion effects your riding / your bike.

I didn't get asked any pillion questions on my test, the examiner must have forgotten.

Most of what you have put is right, but also carrying a pillion affects acceleration times, (slower) and your mirrors would need to be adjusted too.

The questions are (If i remember them right ) : What advice would you give to a novice?
For that question break it down into two parts. Part one is before they get on the bike, and part two is when they are on the bike.

Part one: Make sure they have a helmet and that the strap is done up properly, advise them on reflective, protective clothing, tell them where to put their feet and where to hold onto. Tell them not to get onto the bike until you've told them to do so.

Part two: So on the bike now. Tell them not to signal for you, not to fidget. Tell them to lean in with you on the corners (stay in line with your body) and tell them to communicate before you get off the bike, keep feet on footrests at all times.

Next question is what are the legal requirements for carrying a pillion passenger?

So they need their own seat and footrests. Obviously helmet etc.

Last question is: How would carrying a pillion passenger affect the handling of the machine, and what would you need to adjust?

So, adjust suspension, mirrors, lights and tyre pressure. Slower accelerating time, longer braking distance etc.

I think thats everything Maybe you'll be lucky and not get asked the questions like i did

(I'm sure i've worded the questions correctly, im sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong.)

I got told by an instructor that they can be used as a kind of tie breaker if your ride has been 50/50 pass or fail and the right or wrong answers can mean it goes one way or the other.

only get on and off the bike when told by you and to lean with the bike in turns.

legal requirements for carrying a pillion.

There feet must reach the passenger footrest and they must wear a correctly fitted safety helmet with meets current safety standards.

Adjustments you may need to make to the bike for carryinga pillion.

Rear tyre pressure and rear suspension, mirrors and headlight as the front of the bike will be slightly higher.

Just off the top off my head i'm sure all the show me tell me questions can be found on the dsa website.

they ask 2 questions before you start the test
A wrong answer counts as a minor I believe and are added up with the rest at the end of the test
Or to put it another way: learn the questions and answers, they arent hard

I am pretty sure the questions are listed on the DSA website somewhere



As a side note if the examiner doesnt tell you otherwise ask before you do something to the bike he / she didnt directly ask you to do
IE
If they ask you to show that the horn is working
Point to the horn button and say you would press that, the horn wont work unless the ignition is on, is it okay to switch the ignition on?

They will either say, go ahead, or no, that is okay

^ thats a bit dim to be honest tho isnt it.
if he asks to hear the horn function hes already gave you permission to do whatever you need to do to make the horn function..

I was asked two questions about pillions.
One: How should a pillion sit, the instructor literaly meant should he/she sit facing forwards or backwards or sidesaddle etc .
Two: What should I do to the bike, if anything, when taking a pillion.
Obvious answer being adjust suspension and tyre air pressure to the recommended setting in your manual or on swingarm.

As you may well know theres 2 types of questions - Show me or Tell me.

The horn question is a show me, not a tell me.
thats what my instructor taught me.

Yes i know, its like 'show me where you would check your oil level'

So he will ask you to show him how the horn operates, but listen carefully as he may OR may not ask you to actually do it, he may just ask you to show him how you would do it.

A tell me question is like the pillion ones where you wouldn't actually touch/pointing to anything on the bike, you will just tell him what you would do/how you would do it.

and on my test i got asked to check its working, so i turned the cg engine on as you need to.
Plus my instructors sheet with the questions thats in my hand says to show its working not just show how.

The two show/tell me questions are safety questions asked at the beginning of the test, whereas the question about carrying a pillion passenger are asked after the ride when you're back in the test centre, just before the debrief.
