I have a very noisy rattling sound coming from the engine of my 91 kawasaki zxr750.

The rattling is there at tick over and when decelerating but disappears with positive throttle and constant throttle.

Would i be correct in guessing with my limited mechanical knowledge that its the cam chain to blame and if so how easy a home repair is it?

on tick over pull the clutch in to see if it still rattles. this elimimates the motor or the gearbox.
if it still rattles with the clutch in then it depends on the rattle sound.

this rattle is often just carbs out of balance aggravating the normal "primary" rattle of many bikes, it eliminates very little...

a decelleration rattle sometimes indicates worn little ends, but not "too" likely on a modern bike (it'll be a bastard if it is)....

it "could" be your camchain tensioner stuck/requiring adjustment but i've not worked on a kwak for a couple of decades so have no idea of the complexity of the job...

folks are really going to have to listen to your bike to assess where/what the noise is, i have no idea as to suggestions over the internet

On the ZXR, top ends are noisy. But, from what you describe, it sounds like the cam chain tensioner needs adjusting, or better replacing.

Carb balance out of sync on a ZXR will not make it sound any different, not with CV carbs fitted anyway.

I'd go with Rotax with it either being clutch rattle or tensioner. Thumbs Up
