Hi,

Just wnt to clear up a few things. My observation is as folllows:

As approaching roundabout, regular OSM (mirrors, indicate, lifesaver, positioning).

Going left: When I am going left, my observation is: left shoulder check before entering roundabout, right shoulder check before exiting - to check for joining traffic from other lanes.
Going straight: left as entering, left as exiting if I am cutting a lane, but right lifesaver if I am in the left lane and going straight, again to check for joining traffic.
Going right: left as approaching, left as exiting before cutting lane.

I'm wrong, aren't I? C'mon, do me a big favour and offer corrections before my test in a few days time...

sounds about right to me. You're checking for hazards in the places hazards come from, and your reasoning sounds ok to me.

One thing I also tend to do: if i'm passing more than 2 entry points, i'll throw in a left glance down any entry points that I can't effectively observe as I negotiate the roundabout, just in case there's a nutter who clearly isn't planning to stop. This tends to be most likely on slip road entry points where drivers have just been doing 70-90mph and haven't necessarily assessed their approach speed properly.

you're already looking to the right to make sure it's safe to go...
LEFT lifesaver as you exit not right.

Might be a plan to do a right shouldercheck on as approaching too..

Anything past 12 o'clock, do a RIGHT check as you are on your way around, before a final left lifesaver as you start to leave the roundabout.

As said above.. Glance dow every entry lane to look out for the assholes, and one last thing...
WTF are you doing cutting lanes? You'll fail your test on that, so I hope that's just a mistake/miscommunication in the way you have explained it?

lollypops right
you have to follow the roundabout look for the tar lines and keep in that lane, cuttin a lane is a serious fault..

I think I'm missing something here obviously you have to cross the left lan when you're in the right lane, otherwise you'd just keep going in circles!

Anything past 12 o'clock, do a RIGHT check as you are on your way around, before a final left lifesaver as you start to leave the roundabout.

I don't follow here. Wouldn;t I just be looking at the roundabout shubbery with a right check on a right turn?

Youve worded your post like you were straight lining and cutting through lanes, which obviously a fail, you have to follow the roundabout around in the lane, you cant straight line in any lane at all, as thats a phail.

and yet again loz is right because you should have been taught, when turning right you do right checks. and left for left checks.. and because your choosing a exit after 12 oclock, you have to indicate to the left to choose the exit, and you guessed it left indicator so left lifesaver...

Clear enough for ya?

99.9% of the time you will be....
....But not if some impatient idiot on a fireblade was cutting around you on the inside (and yes, I've seen it happen.) Which incidentally is why you should also be checking in your mirrors going around roundabouts.

The object is to know exactly everything that is happening around you, as well as be aware of the things that COULD happen - which is what you are checking for. (And also what the examiner WILL be looking for.)

With regards to the cutting across lanes, you wouldn't REALLY NEED to CUT ACROSS lanes.. as you should ALWAYS exit on the lane you entered the roundabout on.

i.e. If you start in the right hand lane of a duel carriageway, for instance, you MUST leave using the right land lane of the dual carriageway you are turning onto.

If you are going from a single lane to another single lane, you shouldn't have to 'cut' across lanes, as you will gradually move into the left hand lane after the exit before your own. i.e. as you indicate and do the left lifesaver.

There, No cutting of lanes required.

is it okay to stop at every roundabout even if it seems clear - I find this a lot easier yhan going sraight round#?.

I'm a little annoyed because roundabouts are my weak point - I think, my only weak point (although lets see what the examiner says!) - and my test centre begins on an industrial estate and has four massive roundies at every exit but one! So I could fail within 200 yards of the test!!!

When going straight on or left at the roundabout enter in the left hand lane. Never go in the right hand lane to go straight foward unless you are told otherwise by road markings/signs.

Always do a left mirror check followed by a left life saver just as you are exiting the roundabout, regardless of which exit you are taking.

If you are going right at the roundabout then make sure you enter in the right hand lane, again unless you are told otherwise by road markings/signs.

If it is 2 lanes entering and exiting the roundabout (say going straight on), always exit the roundabout on the lane you entered it. The only time you should 'lane cut' is if you are entering in the right hand lane, going right and it is 2 lanes exiting aswell. You can 'cut accross' into the left hand lane as you exit, but ONLY if it is clear. If there is a car in that lane then exit in teh right hand lane. Obviously if he is a tit and decides to go round the roundabout then you will have to go round again. Check his road positioning, indicators, his 'body language' etc etc

You two are confusing me now.#

To confirm, if I'm working my way to the right (thus in the inner lane of the roundabout) I exit into the right of a two lane road and then indicate my way over to the left?

I was being taught only a few weeks ago,
and was told every right turn you need to stop.
and its only dangerous if the person is following too close behind and you should have made a mirror check before slowing down... and assessing the best course of action, as what would the person behind you do, if suddenly a car comes round from the roundabout too fast and you have to break to avoid collision...

Me a tit? I am the wrong that can read people's posts correctly.

You must of seriously fucked up that particular roundabout for him to fail you on exiting in the right hand lane as that is perfectly ok if there is a car exiting on the same exit in the left hand lane.

Also, you don't need to stop at roundabouts, speaking of which i didn't stop at 1 in my test (apart from 1 with traffic lights) because they were clear, even turning right. If there is a car following you at a normal distance, he will be looking to the right to see if its clear also, maybe travelling at 25-30mph. So if you stop while he is still looking you are going to end up in a jam jar.

Take advice from people that have passed their test, not people that have failed Rolling Eyes

tutton I dont know how long youve been riding but I got my first bike when I was 16 and now Im 51 and I am still here, if you ride like you are suggesting you aint gonna be riding too long, you do check behind you but if youve stopped at the round-a-bout then a car comes from behind seeing a clear r'bout and not seeing the numpty biker stopped on it you are in serious trouble that you cant get out of, and yes he may be in the wrong and you can have that written on your tomb stone, dont be a target and learn from other peoples mistakes

We are not talking about what to do in normal riding,
we are talking about test riding.
per example test riding your supposed to be checking mirrors around every 8-10 seconds, do you really do that on the road?
