4 months of change

Ok so I have a stock Gt650r and it's going to be laid up for about 4 months, so what would do you suggest I do to it?

Over inflate the tires buy an optimate and cover all the metal in wd40.


Run it really low on petrol then poor 5 litres of fresh petrol in a day or so before you want to use it.

If you have paddock stands use them.

Why do you suggest 5 litres of petrol? I'd personally suggest either brimming the tank with petrol or using an additive of some sort to stop the tank from rusting.

Drain the float bowls of the carbs, to stop them icking up. I'd also buy an exhaust bung to stop condensation from getting in to the engine. Also - a teaspoon of oil down each cylinder and then putting the plugs back in would be a good idea to make sure the engine remains free.

I'd look into a way of making sure the clutch doesn't stick on as well.

Also... be prepared to service your brakes as they may stick on when you first press the levers.

4 months? Remember to take any stuff off it when you've used it as a shelf, before you next ride it, sorted .

Though from the question, I presume you were actually treating it as a magpie might her nest; wanting to cover it in shiny baubles. In which case, my advice is still relevant .

If it's inside I wouldn't bother doing anything particularly. Optimate on the battery if you've got one, otherwise just let it be.

I'd only worry about all this 'laying up' stuff if it's gonna be outside getting wet, then I'd try and prevent it getting wet.

My bikes have often sat for more than 4 months without being used, never bothers them in the slightest.

Sorry about the miss understanding, I meant modifications wise, the bike is already dry, and well lubed up after yesterday.

I meant like exhaust and that sort of stuff.

Just a word of advice. Don't put WD40 on the bike's chain.

If it is 100% completely and utterly stock (and I mean brake pads, and tyres) then definately change them. Especially the tyres. Brake pads are a must as well and braided brake lines will improve the braking a lot.

Get a new exhaust, or even a full system (not that expensive if I remember from Scorpion) as the stock exhaust is absolute pure shite. And get an undertray and/or tail tidy. And a seat cowl if you can find a /nice/ one as the ones I've seen are fugly to shit.

Keep the tyres off the ground. A full tank of fuel to reduce condensation. Remove spark plugs and spray some lube in, refit plugs.
Plug end cans.
Either use a optimate or just disconnect if its lead/acid type.
As Gordon Ramsey would say " Bike tucked away for winter...DONE"

Considering o-rings are made of RUBBER and WD40 perishes rubber after some time I wouldn't use it on a chain.

It may not perish all rubber.
The fact that it's often used to clean oil and grease off things is a very good reason not to use it, to my mind!
It is a lubricant and will keep it lubricated if used enough; but it'll dry out a lot quicker than other choices, leaving you with nothing.
