Hi
Good luck finding a half decent one. Too many are wrecks (after all they are peoples first bikes, and they learn the effect of no maintenance on them ).
I went looking for one for a neighbour. Finding one for under £1000 is difficult. For £1200 to £1500 you should be able to find a fairly new one.
The engines seem fairly reliable. Build quality is not that great (but plenty don't last long enough for that to be a problem).
Watch out for things that have been wrecked by the previous owner. For example, wrecked chains and sprockets, broken fairing mounting tabs, the wrong type of bolt forced in, blown fork seals, bald tyres.
Also the choke levers on the carb seem quite prone to becoming loose. Without the choke they are a pig to start (although will bump start OK).
Don't buy a new one as you will loose loads of money.
The one we found he paid £750 for. It is cosmetically tatty but mechanically all there. Replaced the clutch lever, clutch cable, speedo cable and a plastic drive gear for the rev counter (after replacing the rev counter cable then finding the rev counter still did not work ). Hopefully at that kind of price he can sell it for not that much of a loss.
There are big differences in the models of RS50. The number of gears varies, older ones had a single sided swinging arm, some have pillion foot rests.
All the best

Cheers 4 that.
What is the risk of it blowing up with the exhaust on, do any of you have a standard rs50 with an arrow exhaust on?
Is there any other modifications i could put on my bike to increase speed and acceleration without causing and mayor problems?
I just dont want to go and spend loads of money and then have my bike blown up within a week. |

When you derestrict them you're meant to change the front sprocket. My mate has a aprilia rx50 which derestricted would do about 55-60mph but we put front sprocket on 1 tooth bigger (from 12 to 13), his top speed is about 65mph now but on a long a road he reached 70mph slip streaming behind a big lorry . ____________________

remember that all 50cc speedo's are only accurate to approximately 40mph, then they slowly go out. So one thats indicating 70 may only be doing 58mph for example.
I'm sure changing the front sprocket also alters the speedo's accuracy, you'll have to confirm this with The Oracle ____________________ Aprilia RSV Mille R Edwards Replica - Aprilia RS250 - Suzuki GSXR600 Supersport Race Bike |

Well i got my exhaust this morning and put it on. Everything seemed to be ok untill it just stopped as if everything cut off. But i was running on reserve so i went and filled up and it went again but then about 50 yards down the road it did the same thing again?
Any ideas?
It was working ok for about 45mins before this happened and i wasnt really hammering it the fastest i went is about 45-50.
But god the acceleration was 10x better. |

Zero. The same thing happened with my mates 50cc. As his bike had never had a race pipe on it before, the engine was not used to being caned so much more. The pipe was fitted and we went for a ride straight after. In fact i was riding it at the time. Going along the A316 full throttle and it seemed to cut out so released throttle and pulled again and it jittered a bit and went really slow so had to pull over. The bike cut out, smoke was coming from the front and it wouldn't start. We proceeded to go to the garage where we bought the exhaust and they had had MANY similar problems. I can't explain it perfectly because I don't know the correct names for everything. Basically he said as the bike had never had a race pipe before, some metal bit (see what i mean ) in the engine heated up loads and caused the bike to cut out. He told us to go back to it and said that it would start because of it having time to cool down. Sure enough the bike started. Ever since then the bike has been fine as the engine has adjusted to the new exhaust.
basically if you get a new exhaust and your bike has never had one before it's best not to thrash it straight away. Run it in at 30-40 for a bit and gradually increase the speed and let the engine get used to all the new strain.
I know thats all very un-technical but thats pretty much what you should do or you could risk blowing your engine up
Hope your bike is ok now Zero.

Carl, didn't you post that on the OCUK forums? If I remember correctly your not old enough to ride it yet, and it has a 68cc kit on it. Seeing as you will be 16, your insurance will not be valid |
