I recently bought a zxr750 from pyroforlife (pleasure doing business sir).
The bike needs a little work, most importantly a new chain and sprockets.
Having never bought these before can anyone recommend a good quality set, including whatever tool I need to attach the chain.
I want to stick with the standard gearing of the bike.
Thanks ____________________ Motorcycle headlight bulbs and HIDs

I need one by Christmas eve as after that I really can't travel to work on the current one, the rear sprocket has a number of half broken teeth.
The sprockets are 16T 45T and the chain is 530 110.
I guess I can only buy sprockets made for my model since the mounting holes etc.. will have to match up?
Also how do I join the chain? I've looked at riveters and they seem danm expensive. ____________________ Motorcycle headlight bulbs and HIDs

You will be better off just taking the bike to a workshop to be done. I would charge an hours labour for chain and sprockets. You are looking at around £40 for that I would imagine. The chain tool is £55 upwards and you would know that the kit is being fitted by someone who has done it many times.
You could use JT sprockets if you want; they are quite cheap. Not sure of prices at the mo though. ____________________ Current bike: VTR1000F Firestorm. Previous: Firestorm (written off) - XJ600 Divvy - NSR125 - DT125 and a load of offroaders. |

Probably not, when my split-link shot off last year the recovery guy just sucked wind in through his teeth and loaded it on the back of the van.
"Not insured mate, if I fit another split-link and that pops off, and spits the chain out the back I'm liable"
Didn't have a soft link and riveter on him, I think they should change their service to "recovery" it's all they do these days.
Back to the OP, I'm in a similar situation at the moment, the C&S are getting towards the end of their life at 14,000 miles, the previous set did 19,000 miles.
Last time it cost £119 inc (525x112 links + sprockets 17T, 42T + fitting + VAT), I've been looking at kits on-line and they're not far off that, then there's P&P, then there's a "decent" splitter/riveter.
I think it's going to the dealer's this time for an OEM set that might give me an extra 5,000 miles. ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |

problem solved almost. My local bike store said they have a DID kit to fit my bike for £87 and can lend me a riveter. They will rivet it for me if push the bike there.
Only problem is they are not open Christmas eve. I finish work at 5pm tomorrow and they close at 17:30, i'm 40min out of town. Will most likely ride like hell and come off attempting to make it. ____________________ Motorcycle headlight bulbs and HIDs

I've copied a page from the Hein Gericke catalogue: here it might help. ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |

Why should you attach your new chain to the old one, why not just put it on the new sprockets by hand?
That flat plate shown in the picture of my riveter, is that to push the link on before riveting the chain?
Also how far should you tighten the screw when riveting and should it be done by hand or with a spanner? ____________________ Motorcycle headlight bulbs and HIDs

Well after 8 hours and a few complications i've done it. Lost two hours on the front sprocket bolt, had to push the bike to a garage to get it undone.
I riveted the link by basically using a wrench on the tool and kept turning until i felt a good resistance, then did an extra bit for luck.
The link looks maybe a fraction mushroomed, i'm sure. Going to be worrying about it now for ages.
The bike feels a 100 times better, so it was worth the effort provided it doesn't brake. ____________________ Motorcycle headlight bulbs and HIDs
