Did you check the valve clearance after fitting? also going along the route of it's smoking badly as well..did you fit new valve seals to the new head? What were the guides like?

yes the feeler gauge should be a good sliding fit but be able to pass under the adjuster. What I'm wondering is are the valve guides worn maybe not the valve seats but the guides that the valves run in? you say it smokes..has this cleared up yet(oil from rebuild getting burnt off1) or is it still doing it? If it's still doing it does it do it more on the over run ie oil being sucked past the valve stem seal

The ticking is likely to be valve clearance, either they were tight before and you never heard them or they are too big now. Is it a regular ticking that changes with revs?

Smoke might be down to oil from assembly. Otherwise the valve stems or seals are not as good as you think they are or the head gasket is leaking into the bore. Is the new piston and rings the right size? did you measure the ring gap when fitted?

ticking could also be a gas leak where the downpipe meets the head if it hasn't been sealed properly (new gasket there ? )

Does it smoke more when you first start it up than when its running? If so it's a fair sign of stem seals on the way out as the oil runs down them when the engine stops into the cylinder.

Also are you 100% sure you put the piston rings in the right order and way round?
