PostPosted: 21:29 - 26 Dec 2008    Post subject: New rear indicators, relay question Reply with quote

I used to have two 12v 23w indicator bulbs on the rear of my Aprilia RX50 and two 12v 10w indicator bulbs on the front. One of my rear indicators snapped so I bought a new set of 2 to replace the rear indicators and the new set have 12v 21w bulbs. The indicators are constantly on now on/very fast either the left or the right side depending on which you turn on, all the other lights are working.

Do I need to see if my current relay has 2 or 3 prongs or something to see if it also controls the other lights?

Over all I need a relay that will work with two 12v 10w bulbs at the front and two 12v 21w bulbs at the rear. Could someone please point me in the right direction? I've used the search button and couldnt find ezactly what I was looking for..

Thanks, Josh

The difference between the 21w and 23w bulbs you've swopped shouldn't have made that much difference with there just being the 2w difference. The front ones at 10W are low wattage, standard fit is usually 21w, everything would probably be OK if you swopped the 2 front ones for 21w bulbs it would slow the rate down and be cheaper than messing about with the relay.

the relay is calibrated for 20W+1.7 so you are overloaded with 23W bulbs . the best way is to change the bulbs . i assume this 23W are Ba9s socket , so replace by 12V 10W Ba9s socket . you can also change the relay by a 40W but i dont recommand because the low power given by the generator .

Okay thanks, yes the rear 23w bulbs have Ba9s sockets where the pins are 180 degrees from each other. My new indicators have the pins 120 degrees from each other so it isn't as easy as fitting new bulbs Confused I don't know the name for the bulb socket that my new indicators have they are the same as the Ba9s except the pins are 120 degrees from each other

Another thing I have noticed is that when I start my bike and turn on the lights for example, as you rev the bike they get brighter, is this normal? Confused

I've found that it is possible to fit the 120 degree bulbs in a 180 degree holder if you carefully file one of the pins off the bulb. The remaining pin is sufficient to hold the buld in afterwards. Thumbs Up

Or I suppose you could just buy the right type bulb... Wink

Thanks guys, I'll give the filing a go and see what happens, are those pins just to hold it in? Confused

When the bike is reving quite high the indicators work nearly perfectly Confused

Okay, tested the filed down bulbs, the originals that were in it with the new indicator holders, they worked but they have the same problem as the new bulbs.. They also got very hot, very quickly

They are constantly on when the bike is at idle and until it revs quite high (my bike doesnt have a revometer Rolling Eyes) then they work perfectly. That must be the way they're meant to work Confused

If I just get it serviced, will they sort it out? Thumbs Up

Thanks

Broadly speaking there are two types of relay available, bi-metal and solid state.

I sell the solid state ones that will handle up to a combined 60W for £6.50 and should have them back in stock in a week.
