Bit of an essay but i really need help on this one, im stumped.
Right well i've been learning to drive the past few months and i'm now ready for my test. My dad has said i can have his 04 1.2 clio sport for free! . The only problem is the cheapest i can find insurance is about £1300 TPFT with both him and my mum on the policy (mum as main driver).
Now, my bike insurance runs out in June and will probably go up as i had a crash which was my fault this year. I can't afford to insure both as im at college with only a part time job, but i have my premium bonds from my nan which could pay for my car insurance which in turn means i can insure the bike for another year. Is it worth spending money my nan has put away on insurance?
Might just insure the bike for 6 months from june which will take me through to winter, i don't need a car as i don't mind riding in all weather but it would be more practical atm. What do you guys think? ____________________ |--Previous--|:2007 Aprilia SX50... --Current--|: 2007 Kawasaki ER-6N

Take the car man,

You can smoke weed and shag in the back of a Clio
I'd say most people on here would go for a car 'full-time' if it came down to it.
Sell the bike and use the money for your car insurance, bikes will still be around in the next couple of years. ____________________ BCF's 6th favourite poster 2009-2010

I presume the car's worth a bit and the 'sport' will seriously bump up the insurance for a young'un. Could probably get an older cheaper car and insurance for less than the price of just insurance for that I reckon.
So depends how much the prestige of having an 04 'sport' is worth to you . |

Surely if you get too carried away with the smokey pokey in the rialto, it'll topple over?

Dont fart arse about with named driver, clearly the insurance companies have caught on to this, hence your price.
Shop around, try Quinn Direct I've known them to be cheap before, also try Footman James, they kick utter anus for insuring strange vehicles and seem to treat you as an individual rather than a boyracing little cnut.
I would suggest selling the clio, and seizing a mk3 astra 1.4-6 or something similar, you will soon grow sick of the gearing on the clio, beleive me.
The amount of money to drive a bigger engined car ain't as much as you'd think, and that quote you had will nearly halve after year 1. ____________________ "Do what you always did, get what you always got" |

I would sell the clio and buy an older car, but i feel it's a waste really? Not many people can afford a good condition 04 car and also an older car will cost more to keep running in terms of fixing it and the like.
In the long run an older car will cost the same anyway, might just wait till next winter to insure the car. That way i can save for insurance and keep the premium bond money i have, as well as keeping the bike.
Sure i can get the insurance down to £1000 if i call around. ____________________ |--Previous--|:2007 Aprilia SX50... --Current--|: 2007 Kawasaki ER-6N

Was that with you as the main driver, though?
Shop around a bit and go for an older car and reckon you could get it down a decent amount. |
It was yes. My dad's in Miami (and don't speak to him) and my mum is in a wheelchair so I can't put anyone else as the main driver. I've tried a couple of family friends (like my mum's carer) and it makes the price higher
I'm not going to bother shopping around. I know I could get it cheaper, etc. But I don't fancy spending more than 500-600 quid and I'm not going to get it that low unless I buy some really really crappy shit car. Like mattspratt's reliatn. Or whatever.
Funnily enough if/when my mum gets a family car through Motability I could drive a 1.6 BMW 1 series... and not pay insurance apart from the £40 a week, which will be payed by me, mum and my sister... But that also includes service, and running costs (apart from petrol, tyres are included).
Only thing is I have an excess of 500 quid. Which I'm not fussed about So I guess I could jsut wait for that ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

Named driver should make a decent difference. An older car does everything a newer car will do from a utilitarian sense. Generally the lower model newer hatchbacks aren't really that 'luxurious'.
If you're happy to forgo the convenience for the sake of being seen in a newer vehicle, <shrugs>, 'sup to you . |

Named drivers work with others as well (I have several people named on my van insurance, for instance). In some cases adding an extra driver onto your insurance may bring it down too... and of course is entirely legal as this is just giving them the option to drive it. I've done this in the past; adding bendy onto my insurance soon after I passed my test knocked £200 off it!
Insurance on old mini's isn't that great if I remember. Try an eighties Fiat Panda, Nissan Micra or similar; obviously all with the smallest engine they offered, etc.
Not sure if I'd want to be seen in a bottom-of-the-range 1 series , but that does sound like a nice option. |
